Grade One Home-School Link – Week of February 27th
 
HOMEWORK
Reading:
 “Good-fit” take- home books
Sound Teams- A list of words containing sound teams will be sent home in your child’s communication bag. Please have your child practice reading/spelling these words and finding the sound teams he/she knows inside each word. You can play a game of “3 in a row” with your child by putting this list into a page protector. Player one reads a word and crosses it out with his/her white board marker, player two then takes a turn. Continue until someone has crossed out 3 words in a row! You can use two coloured bingo chips instead of putting it into a plastic page protector.

WRITING
       We continue to talk about adding details to our stories. Students are working on choosing a small moment and adding organized details with a beginning, middle and ending. Sentences should be becoming more descriptive. For example, instead of “I saw a dog”, students should now be writing “I saw a big brown dog and he was wagging his tail.” The more interesting details (descriptions, feelings, etc.) the better!
We’ve also been looking at sequencing words: first, next, then, finally. They can be used as “sentence starters” and can be helpful when trying to organize the details in stories. We have done some procedural writing (how to make a card/snowman) using these sentence starters.

MATH FOCUS
     -Practice adding zero, one, and two to a number up to 20
     -Doubles to 12  ( 1,1  2,2  3,3  4,4  5,5  6,6
     -“Doubles plus 1” strategy. For example, if your child knows 4+4=8, then he/she can easily solve 4+5 because it is just one more! Knowing doubles facts “in a snap” can help students solve these “near doubles” facts much easier.
 
 
PLEASE REVIEW AND PRACTICE
-Counting backwards from 50-1 and  between two given numbers
-****High Frequency Sight Words****
-Please keep reviewing until mastered. If your child can read the words with ease, have them practice spelling/create sentences in their practice book.
-Practice reading words with blends:
                    stop   still   steer   street   stay    sleep   slip   slug   sling
-Practice printing sentences using the new sight words. Make sure they include capitals and punctuation. Have them reread and edit on their own.
     -Review number words:
zero    one   two  three   four   five   six    seven   eight   nine     ten
then on to……eleven    twelve   thirteen   fourteen  fifteen  sixteen  seventeen  eighteen nineteen twenty
    -Adding one, two, three to a number up to 20.

FEBRUARY:
28th School Spirit Day- Wear blue/yellow
March
1st    100th day of school. Bring a collection of 100 items.
2nd   Outdoor activities- the students will need their snow pants etc.
3rd    Silly Sock Day/Sock Hop in the gym with a real DJ! 
4th-12th  March Break---have a great one!
