Week at a Glance (March 13-17)

Grade 2 Mrs. Dyker/Mrs. Woodley
Week at a Glance (March 13-17)

Nightly – read good fit books. Students now have the option of reading books online on Raz-kids, practice word wall words.

Library – pack books to be returned on Tuesday.

Literacy:
High Frequency Words: Review
We will review the following words this week: where, were, would, could, saw (these words were challenging for quite a few students when we did a spelling review of our high frequency words before the break). Please check your child’s message bag for a copy of this assessment, so you can practice any words that he/she is still having trouble spelling. Please also work on letter reversals and/or proper letter formation/size if this is something your child continues to struggle with.

Word Family:  - ore
How many words can you find that end in “ore”?

Sound Teams: tion/sion
We will practice reading words with tion/sion this week.

Reading strategies: generate & answer questions
We will work on strengthening comprehension by generating and answering questions about the books that we read in class.

Writing: Independent Stories
This week students will begin an independent piece of writing about their March break. We will review the components of a strong “small moment” story at the beginning of the week (lead, introduction, details, conclusion) and then students will work independently to write their stories for the remainder of the week. At the end of the week, students will be given time to edit and fix-up their writing.

Math: Addition and Subtraction to 18
This week we will be looking at “fact families”. A fact family is made up of two “parts” and a “whole thing”. For example, the numbers 4, 3, & 7 are a fact family (4 & 3 are the two parts that make the whole thing of 7). The numbers in a fact family can be used to write two addition and two subtraction sentences, as seen below:
4 + 3 = 7
3 + 4 = 7
7 – 3 = 4
7 – 4 = 3

You can have your child practice writing the 2 addition and 2 subtraction sentences for different fact families at home.

Reminders/Important Dates:

April 17 – Easter Monday – no school

Thanks and have a great week!
