Grade 2
Week at a Glance (April 3-7)

Nightly  Read good-fit books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.

Library – Pack library books Tuesday to be returned Wednesday

Literacy:

High Frequency Words: Review
There are no new words this week.  Please continue to practice reading and writing word wall words.

Word Family:  - ip
How many words can you find that end in “ip”?

Sound Teams:
We will learn about contractions this week.

Reading:   comprehension, expression and fluency
·       Please continue to check for comprehension by having your child answer questions about the stories he/she reads, as well as retelling the most important events.
·       Make sure your child is using punctuation to make their reading more fluent and expressive (ie; stopping for periods, pausing for commas, using enthusiasm in their voice for exclamation marks, etc.)

Reading strategies:  We will be looking at text features to see how authors use them:  ellipses and dashes.

Writing:   We will be continuing to study nonfiction writing. Students will learn to write procedural texts that we call “how-to” writing. Students will learn the purpose of this type of writing (to teach others how to do something such as how to make toast), and how it must enable the reader to do what is being taught (steps must be clear, organized, and make sense).  This week students will be choosing their own How To topic, planning, writing, editing and publishing their very own How To book.  We are very excited!

Math: We are continuing our unit on two digit addition and subtraction.  The learning goals of this unit will build upon what was learned in our unit on addition and subtraction to 18. Outcomes include:
Number (N)
8.                   Demonstrate and explain the effect of adding or subtracting zero to/from a number

9.                   Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of 1 & 2 digit numbers with answers to 100 by:
using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without manipulatives (hundred charts, open number lines, base ten blocks).
creating and solving problems that involve addition and subtraction
explaining that the order in which numbers are added does not affect the sum
explaining that the order in which numbers are subtracted may affect the difference
