In preparation for the upcoming provincial assessment, we will be focusing on reading comprehension practice. Students will be engaged in reading nonfiction, and informational texts, each followed by a relevant comprehension activity to encourage reading for understanding and using various reading strategies to answer questions about the text.

Math
This month we are beginning a unit on Addition and Subtraction to 100.
The learning goals of this unit will build upon what was learned in our unit on addition and subtraction to 18. Outcomes include:
Number (N)
8. Demonstrate and explain the effect of adding or subtracting zero to/from a number
9. Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of 1 & 2 digit numbers with answers to 100 by:
• using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without manipulatives
• creating and solving problems that involve addition and subtraction
• explaining that the order in which numbers are added does not affect the sum
• explaining that the order in which numbers are subtracted may affect the difference
10. Apply mental math strategies to determine addition/subtraction facts to 18, such as:
• using doubles
• making 10
• one more/ one less
• two more/ two less
• addition for subtraction
Patterns and Relations (PR)
3. demonstrate and explain the meaning of equality and inequality by using manipulatives and diagrams
4. record equalities and inequalities symbolically using the equal symbol or the not equal symbol.
You & Your World
The theme this month is Earth Day/Healthy Environments. We will look at the importance of conserving, protecting, and sustaining healthy environments. Outcomes include:
2.5.4E: discuss the effects of waste disposal on quality of our environment (air/soil/water)
2.5.4A: identify various physical environments and natural resources (local/national/global)
2.5.4B: discuss sustainability issues
