Grade 2 Week at a Glance (April 11-13)

Grade 2
Week at a Glance (April 11-13)

Nightly  Read good-fit books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.

Library – Pack library books Tuesday to be returned Wednesday

Literacy:

We worked on spring words last week and are now looking at Easter words.
Have your child practice reading: bunny, egg, Easter, candy, chocolate, chick, basket, thaw, kite, flower, rainbow, sunshine, shower.

Word Family:  - ash
How many words can you find that end in “ash”?

·       We will be learning about compound words - two words that go together to make one word. (ie; butterfly, sandbox, etc.)  Have your child try to find compound words in the books he/she reads.

Please review ALL strategies for decoding unknown words:

1.     Eagle eye – use picture clues
2.     Lips the Fish – say the first few sounds of the word
3.     Stretchy snake – stretch the word slowly and then put the sounds back together
4.     Chunky monkey – look for a chunk you know
5.     Flippy Dolphin – if the short vowel sound doesn’t work, try the long vowel sound, and vice versa
6.     Skippy Frog – skip the word and read to the end of the sentence, then hop back
7.     Tryin’ Lion – try a word that makes sense

Writing:  We will finish up our How to writing. Students have learned how to write procedural texts.  This week students will finish up their How to book and we will share our work with other writers during an Author’s Celebration.

Math: We are continuing our unit on two digit addition and subtraction.  The learning goals of this unit will build upon what was learned in our unit on addition and subtraction to 18.

We are focusing on using models such as hundred charts, open number lines, and base ten blocks to solve addition problems.  We have used the front-end strategy which has students add the tens and then the ones.  For example:  42+21=   40+20 =60 and 2+1=3  60+3= 63.    We will continue to use models to solve different types of 2 digit addition problems this week.  The students will be taught several strategies and then they will pick the one that works best for them.  Please have your child continue to add and subtract groups of ten to different two digit numbers.  They should be able to add/subtract tens quickly.  24+30,
50 -20 =       , 30+47 etc.
