​Math

·         We are just wrapping up with representing and describing whole numbers to 1 000 000. We are about to start with estimation strategies including; front-end rounding, compensation and compatible numbers in problem-solving contexts.

·         Basic facts - In Grade 5 students should be able to recall multiplication facts with little or no effort. To practice their basic facts, students can use a deck of cards (face cards removed); flip over two cards, then multiply the numbers on the cards to find the product.

·         Mental math - We are working on compensation of 2 digit numbers.

Ex:  29 x 15 (think of 30 x 15 = 450 and subtract one group of 15) = 435

                               (15 X 3 = 45 and add a 0)

Literacy

·         We have been working on synonyms and homophones for the past month. The children have also been working hard on their writing skills.

·         We try to get two rounds of daily 5 from Monday through Thursday every week. During daily 5 they have different stations to choose from while I work with a group at the guided reading table.  During this time I help the kids with reading, pronunciation and comprehension.

Homework

I want the students to read for 15 minutes every evening. Please sign the sheet acknowledging that your child has read. Thank you!

We have library on Mondays, Library books should be returned every Monday!

Thursday, October 5^th – The cafeteria is serving a Thanksgiving dinner for students. The cost is $6.00.

Thanksgiving Monday October 9^th - No school

October 16^th to 20^th – Safe schools week

October 20^th – Picture day

October 24^th – Professional Learning day, students are dismissed at 11:00 am

October 27^th – Halloween Howl 6:00 to 7:30 pm
