Nov 5-10 update
Hello parents/guardians!

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
A paper was sent home today about picking your top 1-2-3 interview times. The time blocks are first-come-first-serve (while still considering siblings at the school of course). Please return those to school as soon as possible.

MATH
Number sense is an ongoing learning target. Many students are improving on their addition and subtraction. Try asking them to show you how to do some mental math addition questions with 2 digits + 2 digits on a number line!

FRENCH LITERACY
Today we started working on an independant writing piece. Students are writing on a positive event that has occured in their life (ex: birthday, vacation, sports game, etc). This exercise is to "show what you know" on how to organize their ideas, how to be succinct in their writing, how to use descriptive words, and how to review and correct their own work. Mlle Perreaux will be editing their good-copy and then sending the whole package home for you to see.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We have been steadily developing our understanding of the six physical regions located across Canada. Ask your child about our "Jeopardy" game - lots of fun, lots of learning! Key subjects include: climat, topographie, climate and vegtation. Soon we'll be writing a poem about "If I could visit any region...". Looking forward to seeing their creative pieces showcasing what they know about the regions.

SCIENCE
Today kick-started our Habitat project (research + diorama)! It was awesome to see our little scientists at work in our classroom. I wanted to give you all a quick glance at what the project entails because today in class I received lots of excited questions about “CAN I DO THIS AT HOME?!!?”. So, here’s the scoop if your child asks for your assistance at home.

Each student has already selected a Habitat, either an: arctic habitat, Antarctic habitat, the rainforest / the jungle, a temperate forest (acadian forest – what we have here in NB), the prairie / grasslands , the desert, the ocean, a freshwater river or a swamp.

Today they started their research:
In our classroom is a couple dozen books in French and English that describes the various habitats. Some students asked if they can go the library and take out their own book – awesome, go for it! The goal of the research is to acquire a strong understanding of their habitat. Any info written in English will need to be translated into French. Students need to identify (a list is sufficient): the vegetation, the climate, and 5-10 animals & insects that live in their habitat. Students need to also identify and explain the different populations and the general community  of the habitat they are studying.

The model/diorama:
Materials to bring from home: a shoe box and any props/tools that the students need to include to represent their habitat well.  Mlle Perreaux is supplying: some modelling clay (perhaps to make animal shapes), construction paper, and I’ll also have a glue gun available in class. I also have a couple extra shoe boxes if anyone needs one. We had a great discussion in class about how it is up the students on how much or little they include in their habitat, as long as they have included the required items in the research and their habitat box. Students are definitely allowed to bring their own materials from home.

Timeline:
It is not the expectation for students to spend countless hours on this project. It is an activity that is expected to be completed at school during class time. Yes – students can bring it home to continue working on it, but it is the expectation that students will have their habitat box at school for the work “at school”. Some students are super keen to work on it over the long weekend  and anyone is allowed to do so if they want.

Please have your child bring all necessary materials to school as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, please keep in touch!

Merci J
