Grade 2 Week at a Glance (March 26 -29)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

NightlyRead good-fit books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.   Practice word wall words, sound teams and no excuse spelling words.

In order to be at benchmark for the April report card, your child must be able to read and understand texts at level J.

Literacy:

All grade 2 high frequency words (sight words/word wall words) have been introduced.  These are the words your child needs to read in a snap. Please continue to work on any words your child may struggle with.

The next outcome is spelling. By the end of grade 2 your child is expected to know how to spell the 103 Grade 2 “No Excuses” Spelling Words (they are the grade 1 word wall words).  This list was sent home last week in your child’s message bag.

We have been practicing here at school and we will be assessing them over the following weeks. Please take the time to work with your child on this outcome.

Homophones:  We will learn about homophones this week.  These are words that sound the same, but may be spelled differently and have different meanings.  For example:  they’re, their, there, to, too, two, wood, would.

Reading strategies: We will be looking at text features to see how authors use them:  italics, fonts, bold, underline, and capital letters.

Writing: We will continue studying nonfiction writing. Students will learn to write procedural texts that we call “how-to” writing. Students will learn the purpose of this type of writing (to teach others how to do something such as how to make toast), and how it must enable the reader to do what is being taught (steps must be clear, organized, and make sense).

Math:   Another strategy to help with addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers is being able to quickly skip count by tens starting at any number.  For example, ask your child to start at 46 and count on 32.  This is the same as 46+32.  Your child should be able to solve by saying 56, 66, 76, 77, 78.  This is a very helpful strategy for solving 2 digit addition and subtraction questions without the use of models. Practice counting back for subtraction…85-32…75, 65, 55, 54, 53.
