Grade 2 Week at a Glance (April 9-13)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

NightlyRead good-fit books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.   Practice word wall words, sound teams and no excuse spelling words.

Literacy:

We will be learning about compound words - two words that go together to make one word. (ie; butterfly, sandbox, etc.)  Have your child try to find compound words in the books he/she reads to you at home.

Reading:   Comprehension, Expression and Fluency

·       Please continue to check for comprehension by having your child answer questions about the stories he/she reads, as well as retelling the most important events.

·       Make sure your child is using punctuation to make their reading more fluent and expressive (ie; stopping for periods, pausing for commas, using enthusiasm in their voice for exclamation marks, etc.)

Please review ALL strategies for decoding unknown words:

1.     Eagle eye – use picture clues

2.     Lips the Fish – say the first few sounds of the word

3.     Stretchy snake – stretch the word slowly and then put the sounds back together

4.     Chunky monkey – look for a chunk you know

5.     Flippy Dolphin – if the short vowel sound doesn’t work, try the long vowel sound, and vice versa

6.     Skippy Frog – skip the word and read to the end of the sentence, then hop back

7.     Tryin’ Lion – try a word that makes sense

Writing:  We will finish up our How to writing. Students have learned how to write procedural texts.  This week students will finish up their How to book and we will share our work with other writers during an Author’s Celebration.

Math:   Practice adding and subtracting at home by counting money (pennies, nickels and dimes).  Make two piles of coins (adding to $1.00 or less) and have your child add them up.  Write the number sentence that goes with the question.  For example, if you have a pile with 23 cents and you added 2 dimes how much money would you have now? (23 cents + 20 cents = 43 cents).
