​​Grade 2 Week at a Glance (May 22-May 25)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday. 

Nightly – Read good-fit books/Raz-Kids.   Reading out loud to a family member helps with fluency and expression.   

Literacy:  Please continue to practice/review all sight words and Sound Teams. If your child can read all of the sight words, have him/her try spelling them or writing them in a sentence.  Practice spelling the grade 2 no excuse spelling words (please focus on the words your child spelled incorrectly on the assessment that went home last week).

Reading: 

The Grade 2 Provincial Reading Assessment begins Tuesday May 22.  We will complete the assessment during our literacy block.  We will spend small chunks of time on the assessment each day until it is complete.  It is important your child arrives to school on time and is well rested.  Please continue to have your child read Raz-kids and answer the comprehension questions and/or read to you and answer comprehension questions after the reading.

Writing:  Non-fiction writing - The students will be researching information about an animal and writing a report. 

Math: 

Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts (both single digit and double digit), both orally and with paper and pencil.

Practice Facts with answers to 20 and make sure your child is using strategies:

• Counting-on and counting-back in their head (17+3, 20-2, etc.)

·        “Making 10” – For example, for 13+9, take 1 from 13 to make the 9 a 10, and13 is now 12. Now it is easy to solve because12+10 is 22! Students can think about those patterns we noticed on the 100 chart.

• Doubles (7+7, 8+8, etc.)

• Near Doubles (doubles plus/minus 1 and 2). For example, for 7+8, students know 7+7 =14, so 7 + 8 is just 1 more! (doubles plus one).  

Reminders/Important Dates:

May 21 – Victoria Day – No school.

May 22 – Grade 2 Provincial reading assessment begins.

May 29 - Half Day professional learning.  Students will be dismissed at 11:30 (please note the change of time).

June 18 – K-2 Field Day (please be sure your child is dressed for the weather and has appropriate outdoor footwear for running, jumping etc…)

June 12 – Family Picnic (more information to follow).

June 13 – Bike Rodeo 1:00-2:30 (more information to follow).

June 22 – Last day of school
