Sight words

Sight words need to become easily recognized by your child. This vocabulary will enable him/her to increase fluency and ease of reading. A sight vocabulary is acquired through lots of reading where your child sees the same words over and over in many different contexts, through writing and through rereading of familiar books, poems, etc. These words I send home will have been practiced in class. They are words common to the poems and books we have done. About five will be sent home each week. There will be over 100 words!

Please practice them regularly. When new ones come home review previous words as well. These words are often not “easy sound out words”. Sounding out fat is easier to sound out than the or there. You could write the words on 2 sets of cards and use them to play a game of fish or memory.

I am sending (Monday) you the list of sight words your child needs to know by the end of grade 2. Put this list in a safe place. Each week I will send home the words we are working on that week. Please highlight these words every week in the plastic sleeve. These highlighted words are the words your child needs to instantly know. If your child is ahead of the game and wants to work ahead feel free! Try spelling them!
