Kindergarten Weekly Update

IMG_6310.JPGIMG_6311.JPGIMG_6312.JPGIMG_6314.JPG

This week was a great week of learning.  In math we continued work on our numeracy strand, focusing on subitizing, counting and making sets to 5 and discussing more/fewer.  In literacy, we continued work on alphabet activities, rhyming and reading comprehension through read alouds.  In You and You World we have been learning about the life cycle of apples and have continued learning about perseverance.

Upcoming week - Oct. 2-6

Literacy - We will begin our Jolly Phonics program and sight word program.  Students will learn the letter sounds s, a, t and the sight words it, at.

Numeracy - We will continue working on all the concepts that have been introduced but will focus on sorting in the upcoming week.  Following that, we will move into our pattern unit.

You and Your World - We will focus on what makes us special and unique.

Homework - Homework will begin this week but it should only take 2 or 3 minutes per night.  At the end of the week, I will send home letter cards on a ring for you to practice with your child.  Show the children the card and ask them to tell you what sound it makes, what the letter is and if they can think of any words that begin with the sound.  The biggest focus should be on the sounds as knowing the sounds is how they will begin to learn to read.  Laminated sight word cards will also go home for you to practice with.  Flash the card and have your children practice reading them as quickly as they can.  There are numerous different activities you can do to practice learning sight words that are fun and engaging.  I will send home some information shortly for you to peruse or feel free to search online for sight word games that you could easily create at home.  I reuse these cards every year so I would really appreciate it if you could try and keep them in the best condition possible. Some families like to keep them in the communication binder pouch and others like to put them on the fridge or in a prominent place at home that the children can see frequently.
