Weekly What’s Up: October 30-November 3, 2017
Happy Halloween!!!
Literacy:   We will continue to explore our Halloween books this week.  The students have enjoyed the selection of parody books that I’ve shared.
Please remember to record the title of the book your child reads each night on their calendar page.
Independent writing pieces will be coming home on Wednesday (sorry for the delay) in a yellow duo tang.  Please read the piece and the rubric over with your child and then sign and return the duo tang.
Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 39-43.  We have completed some pattern assessments.  In our Halloween themed centers this week we will continue to practice: even and odd numbers, 10 partners and creating and extending patterns.
Halloween candy makes a great math tool.  You can have your child sort their candy and explain what rule they used (chocolate and non-chocolate, by size, by shape) and they can make patterns using candy.  You could also present your child with an amount of candies and ask them what one more or one less would be, what would happen if you added zero pieces of candy to their bag, what would the 10 partner be for a given amount of candy, etc.
You and Your World: Today we talked about the importance of balancing our Halloween treats with healthy food choices.  We learned that candy doesn’t give us the right nutrients to power our bodies through a day at school, but healthy foods do.  A great idea to help teach portion control is to have your child portion their candy out into bags based on how much you/they think is an acceptable amount to eat in one day.  You can also sell this idea as a way to make their treats last longer.  Please remember that any candy they bring to school must be peanut free.  We talked about how being a nut free school shows that respect and care about others with food allergies.
This week we will be learning about careers.  If you would like to come in and talk to the class about your profession, or know someone who would enjoy being a guest speaker please let me know.
Students are encouraged to wear black and orange tomorrow.  We will have a typical morning and our party will be in the afternoon.  Thank you to everyone who signed up to send in a treat!
