Weekly What's Up: November 14-17
I was so proud of how well the class did in the Remembrance Day assembly.  Thank you for practicing the poem with your child at home.
I think it is safe to say that the winter weather has arrived.  We have entered the season of hats, mittens and warm boots!
Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book your child reads each night on their calendar page.  This week we will be starting the Words Their Way program.  Mrs. Burnett will be teaching us how the program works.  Each student will have words to work with during literacy centers that are individualized to their level.  The program will help strengthen their decoding abilities when reading as well as their spelling abilities.
Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 48-51.  We will be half way to the 100th day of school this week! We are continuing to challenge ourselves with representing numbers.
We are continuing to practice our doubles facts and naming and making 2D shapes.  You can practice doubles by rolling a die or selecting a card from a deck and asking your child to double the number.  They should be able to tell you that “The double of 2 is 2+2=4”.  As doubles are a mental math strategy the goal is for them to answer quickly without using counting strategies (fingers, counting on, counters).
You and Your World:  This week we are learning about being positive and having a growth mindset.  The word “can’t”  will not be allowed in our classroom.  We’re going to learn to replace it with “I’m having trouble, but I will keep trying” or “I can’t do this yet, but I’m not going to give up.”  What other positive phrases can you and your child add to our list?
Dates to Remember
Tuesday, November 14: Hot Lunch (Great Canadian Bagel)
Wednesday, November 15: Library Books due back
Thursday, November 16: Hot Lunch (Pizza Twice)
Toy Day  The class has worked hard to earn a reward for showing expected behaviour.  They asked Mrs. Burnett for special permission to bring a special toy to school for one day.  On Thursday they can bring a small toy to school.  This is the only day that students are allowed to bring toys to school.
Friday, November 17: Leo Hayes activity groups
Parent Teacher conference appointment request sheets due back
Monday, November 20: Report cards go home
Have a great week!
