Welcome back from the weekend! This week, all students should be bringing
home levelled books (in their Communication bag) to practice at home each

use those as well/instead.

Homework
The homework
assigned is an extension of class instruction and meant for extra practice.
Completed activities can be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you
would like to share with me, please do so. I will be checking reading
logs throughout the week.
Reading- read aloud (even to
yourself!) for 15 minutes each night. Complete the reading log each night.
Remember to have it signed. Talk to your parents about what you are reading at
school this week and what your current reading level is.
Word Work- Students have begun using
the Words Their Way Program this week in class. Since we are still learning
about the program, all students will complete their word work activities at
school this week. Look for a copy of the list words later this week in students’
Communication Bags.
Numeracy- Practice math facts each
night and have someone quiz you if possible. Try visiting the numeracy websites
below for extra practice or making your own flashcards. Game suggestion:
Subtraction War Using a deck of cards, each player flips a card at the same
time. First person to call out the difference collects those cards. Player with
most cards wins at the end wins. (Use more than 2 cards for a challenge.)
Areas of Focus for November
27-December 1, 2017
Writing- This week, students will continue learning more about Sentence
Structure as one of the 6 Traits of Writing. They will review the differences
between simple and compound sentences and use a chart to keep track of sentence
length, and varied beginnings in their writing.
Reading- Students will participate in Guided Reading groups based on their
reading level. In our small groups, we will be learning more about text
features in both fiction and nonfiction texts. We will also focus on using
reading strategies when reading challenging text and how to make connections
with the text, and between texts.
Word Work- Students have begun to use the Words Their Way Program
and are enjoying it! This week, each student will receive a differentiated word
list based on their own strengths and abilities, as previously determined with
use of the WTW assessment tool. All word work activities will be complete
during class time this week.
Numeracy- This week we continue to investigate Unit 3: Addition and
Subtraction. All students have completed the Unit 2 Math Assessment and this
was made available to parents during Parent-Teacher interviews. In grade 3 this
week, students will focus on using strategies for addition facts (ex: make 10,
doubles, near doubles), patterns in addition charts, and the relationship
between addition and subtraction. Students in grade 4 will be learning more
about estimating sums of 3 and 4 digit numbers and using strategies for
addition facts (ex: front-end estimation, round to nearest 1 00/1 000).
Science- This week we continue to explore our Habitat unit. We will review
what we have learned about several different
types of habitats and explore how habitats change over time, based on fossil
findings throughout the world.
Personal Wellness- Students will be exploring Canada’s Food
Guide and learning about healthy food choices.
