Weekly What’s Up: January 22-26, 2018
What a lovely weekend we had!  I wonder what this week’s weather has in store for us.
On February 1 we will be going to York Care with our grade 5 buddies.  If you are able to join us (between 10:30 and 12:00) please let me know as we will need a volunteer to go with us.  If you do not have Policy 701, please contact the school for information.  It is a quick online course.
A reminder that our new start time means students should be arriving at school by 8:10.  Students have from 8:10 to 8:20 to get ready for the day and then classes start at 8:20.
Thank you to all who sent in Kleenex.  Our noses are very appreciative.
If your child is new to McAdam Ave this year they will need to bring in a pair of head phones.  These will be kept in a bag labeled with their name and will follow them to grade 3 and beyond.  These will be used in our listening center during literacy and with the iPads.  Any style is fine and they can be purchased at the dollar store.
Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night.
This week we will be writing independent recounts.  These pieces will be finished and marked this week (depending on storm days) and will be sent home for you to read and sign next week.  Students continue to work on their personalized word work lessons with Words Their Way.  Our No Excuses words for this week are: now, this, mother and see.  These are words that students should be able to read quickly and spell correctly.  Tic tac toe is a great way to practice spelling.  Instead of x and o, each player selects a no excuses word to write in their spaces.  An observation was made today the how (last week’s word) and now rhyme.  Since we already know how to spell how, now is an easy one to learn!  You can practice at home by looking for other rhyming words.
Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 85-89.
This week we will be learning about comparing mass.  Today students were introduced to the balance scale and we talked about heavier and lighter.  You can create your own balance scale at home using a clothes hanger and two cups on strings.  Attach string to each cup and then tie each cup to the hanger.  Slide the cups to opposite ends and hang the hanger.  You can now compare the mass of different items or groups of items.  We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction to 20.  Remember to look for real life opportunities to use addition or subtraction!
