Kindergarten - Jan. 22-26

I am trying to upload photos but they continue to give me some difficulty by turning the pictures sideways.  I will PERSEVERE and try to get them uploaded this week.  There are some really cute ones of the students.

Thank you for your continued work with your child on their reading, sight words and letter sounds.  Having your child read their levelled books to you each night is invaluable in helping them improve.  In addition, please read aloud to your child as well as often as possible.  Developping a love of reading at this age will benefit them in the future as they grow.

Literacy:  We are working on short vowel sounds, CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant), stretching and blending sounds, sight words (little, look, me).  In writing, we continue to work on hearing sounds in words and recording them in our writing.  We are focusing on using capital letters, spaces and stop marks as well.  For our speaking and listening outcomes, we have been very engaged in developmental center play.  This is your child's favourite time of day and I am noticing many wonderful character traits emerge.  I have been documenting, through our play, areas of growth that need to be addressed, particularly, social and emotional needs, and I plan to address these needs through focused instruction.

Numeracy:  We have been reaping the benefits of having a math lead, Mrs. Thomas, in our class for the past several weeks.  This is her final week with us.  We have been focusing on numeracy concepts such as knowing the number that comres before and after a number between 1 and 10, counting on and back from any number between 1 and 10, subitzing, making sets and counting sets to 10 and showing numbers in two parts.  Incorporating these skills into your conversations at home or in the car will benefit your child.  These can be very challenging concepts, especially, that of knowing the number that comes before another number.  Thank you for your continued support.

You and Your World:  We have begun the study of "Groups".

As you can see, we have been very busy in our kindergarten classroom and I am delighted to be noticing wonderful gains in their academic skills.
