Good morning parents of the fabulous 5s!

To begin, thank you very much to all parents and students who attended our student-led conferences last week. I am proud of the accomplishments of these students, and it was nice to have the students share their work with you.

Here is what we are learning the grade 5 classroom this week...

Literacy: April is POETRY MONTH! Students are learning to express themselves through poetry. This week, we will be learning about free verse poetry. Students wrote BEAUTIFUL poems today!

Math: In Math, students are learning about perpendicular, parallel and intersecting lines. They will learn to identify and create lines of each type, and we will create art using these types of lines as well.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, students are creating posters surrounding First Nations culture. They are also discussing our guest speaker from last week, his story, and their experience during his visit.

Science: In Science this week, students will complete an assessment of their understanding of simple machines and friction, through a "Show What you Know" as well as creating a poster.

Important notes...

FRIDAY: This Friday, April 20th, I will be ordering pizza for the students at lunch time. This is to celebrate their accomplishments during the Business Expo, and their hard work during the entire project. Students who ordered hot lunch can still eat their hot lunch, or bring it home. Students will still need a snack on Friday.

We will be completing our class read aloud this week (Matilda). Therefore, as an extension activity, we will also be watching "Matilda," which is the adaptation of the children's book by Roald Dahl. Students will compare and contrast the movie and book, and we will explore the ways in which movies are adapted.

It is rated PG, for some mature themes (I've re-watched it recently, and regarding themes: the parents aren't kind to Matilda, regarding language; it mentions the word "hell" and eludes to Matilda's father's death). This movie is on the "kids" account on Netflix, and there are clips available on YouTube, if you'd like to preview it. If you feel this movie is not appropriate for your child, please contact me as soon as possible.

DRAMA: A reminder that there is no Drama practice on Wednesday this week, due to Circulation ball.

Thank you very much for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Liz McCabe
