Areas of Focus for April 23-27, 2018

Writing- This week, students finish the good copy of their Persuasive Writing piece. During Guided Writing students will work with the teacher to edit and revise their work according to the 6+1 Traits and use the resources in their Writer’s Toolkit to create a piece they are proud of.

Reading- Students reading below level P should have 2 books in their Communication Bag at their reading level, to practice at home each night. Students reading above level P should have a chapter book in their bag or that they keep at home, to read each night. During Guided Reading this week, each small group will meet with me as we explore the special text features of nonfiction books/texts. Please encourage your child to read nonfiction text at home this week.

Word Work- Each student will complete sorting activities related to their own differentiated list of words. This child-centered approach replaces traditional spelling tests and helps students recognize and learn how to apply sound, pattern, and meaning in their sorts and other text forms. You will find a copy of this list in the Communication Bag this week.

Numeracy- This week all students complete a unit assessment related to Statistic and Probability. Students will answer questions that require them to read/interpret/construct bar and line graphs. In Guided Math, each small group of students will meet with the teacher to complete this assessment independently.  During stations, students will also work in groups to complete activities/games that review math facts for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. Here are short videos explaining line and bar graphs:

Science- This week we begin our exploration of

Homework

The homework assigned is an extension of class instruction and meant for extra practice. Completed activities can be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with me, please do so.

Reading- read aloud (even to yourself!) for 20 minutes each night. Complete the reading log each night and remember to have it signed. Talk to someone about the Connections you make when you read (memories of experiences, books you have read, questions you have etc.)

Word Work- Students are still working on last week’s list of words from the Words Their Way program; copies were sent home on the Communication Bag. If you would like suggestions for how to use this list at home, please let me know. Otherwise, please refer to the activity list that was sent home when the program began.

Numeracy- Practice math facts each night and have someone quiz you if possible. Make your own or have a parent create a math worksheet to practice multiplication and then check using a calculator. All students are now practicing how to interpret and create bar and line graphs. Here’s a great website for practice worksheets.  http://www.commoncoresheets.com/BarGraphs.php
