Good afternoon parents of the fabulous 5s!

We had a great end to our week last week, with a pizza lunch. Students then watched "Matilda" while comparing and contrasting the movie with the novel, which we recently completed as a class read aloud.

Here is what we are learning in the grade 5 classroom this week...

Literacy: In Literacy this week, we will be looking at different poets. I encourage parents to share any favourite poems with your children! Authors we will be discussing include Sherri Fitch, Shel Silverstein, Roald Dahl, E.E Cummings, and Walt Witman.

Students have completed their poetry books, and they did a wonderful job! These books will be displayed outside our classroom, and will be sent home at the end of this week.

In writing, we will begin persuasive writing. Students will consider their personal opinions on various topics, and we will begin by writing a class letter.

Math: In Math this week students will be working on outcome SS6: identifying and sorting quadrilaterals. We will review 2D shapes that have 4 sides, learn to explain the sorting rule, as well as sort a given set of quadrilaterals according to the length of the sides, or according to whether or not the opposite sides are parallel.

Social Science: In Science, students will compare the friction created by various materials, during a Science Experiment. We will also complete our KWL chart for the Simple Machines unit.

Important notes...

Tuesday: Tuesday afternoon is a PD day for teachers. A reminder that dismissal is at 11:30 am on Tuesday, April 24th.

Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Liz McCabe
