Weekly What’s Up: April 30- May 4, 2018

I can’t believe we’re saying goodbye to April this week.  We’ve had the April showers, bring on the May flowers.  We made and delivered a bouquet of coffee filter flowers to Mrs. Yerxa to thank her for all of her hard work on Administrative Professionals day.  There’s a picture on the school’s Twitter feed.

If your child is staying home from school, for any reason, please call the office or send an email to let Mrs. Yerxa or myself know.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night.  We will be focusing on comprehension skills this month as we prepare for the grade 2 literacy assessment that students will write at the end of May.  When reading with your child, stop at various points throughout the book and ask them questions about the story or new vocabulary words.

No Excuses words for this week are: get, make, saw, would and up. These are words that students should be able to read quickly, spell correctly and use correctly in a sentence.  Many students chose to bring home the poem that they wrote and shared during our whole school Poem In My Pocket event.  We borrowed the idea for our poem from Sheree Fitch’s Mable Murple.  I copied their poems and will be sending them to Sheree Fitch.

Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 138-141.  We’ve experimented with representing our days of school number using coins.

We continue to work on selecting appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction, with students working with equations at their level. Some students are working with 2 digit equations, some are working with a combination of one and two digits and some students are working with one digit equations. Please continue to practice real world word problems with your child.  Regular practice of the basic math facts (10 partners, doubles, 1more/less) is beneficial as students are realizing that using mental math is faster than having to calculate the answer.

We are continuing to practice counting coins.  We’ve practiced grouping like coins when counting and we’ve practiced counting on from a given total.  Please continue to practice at home.
