Good morning parents of the fabulous 5s!

Here is what we're learning in the grade 5 classroom this week...

Literacy: Students continue to learn about writing persuasively. We will finish our class letter on uniforms, and students will continue to work on their persuasive piece. Next, students will begin a persuasive letter on a topic of their choice.

In addition, we have begun a spelling program today called "Words Their Way". Each week students will receive a specialized list of words/sounds to practice categorizing in different ways.

- On the first day of each week, students receive their new list for the week.
- They will also receive a second copy of the same list of words/sounds to take home.
- On the 2nd-5th days of the week, students will complete activities in class relating to the words.
- They are then invited to repeat/practice these activities at home, as reinforcement (the word list that is sent home each week is not required to be returned to school)

Math: In Math, we have completed our study on line segments (perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting). Students have demonstrated their learning through art, formal assessment and conferencing. We are now working on sorting quadrilaterals.

Social Science: In Science this week, we will begin our study of physical and chemical changes! Students continue to learn about First Nations culture in Social Studies, with Mrs. Coes.

Health: In Health this week, students will complete an exploration of a chosen career, and the associated skills!

Important notes...

Grad photos: Please consider sending in a baby photo of your graduate, before May 11th, if you would like it to be included in the graduation slideshow.

June 20th: I am still looking for names to add to the decoration committee list! I have a couple of names, but definitely need more hands to bring the graduation to life. The decorating will take place on June 20th. Please consider helping us!

Track and Field: Permission slips for track and field were sent home today.

Swimming: A reminder that we will be going swimming, beginning on Thursday, May 3rd. There are still a couple of students who have not yet paid their $5 fee, which is required to pay for the bus. Please send this in as soon as possible. Students should bring a swimsuit (worn under their clothing) in the am to save time, a towel, a plastic bag, and any under clothing needed.

Friday: A reminder that this Friday, May 4th, there is no school for students. This is a provincial council day for teachers.

Thank you for your continued support!
Miss McCabe
