Week at a Glance April
30-May 3, 2018 Grade ¾
Dear Parent/Guardian,
This week, there will be no classes for students on Friday as
teachers attend Council Day 2018. Students
have completed their persuasive writing piece and will be excited to bring it
home to share with you this week. This piece will have a mark ranging from 1-4+,
with 3 being considered “at grade level” or “appropriate”. Please sign and
return this once you have reviewed it with your child.
Several worksheets were sent home last week and I thank you
for taking the time to go through your Child’s Communication Bag to review
these. Please keep these work examples at home for your information, and look
for more this week! J
If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact me at shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca, or call 453-5422 to schedule a meeting.
Sincerely,

Areas of Focus for April 30-May
3, 2018
Writing- This week, students will meet with me in small groups to
organize their Writer’s Notebook and review how to use our writing center for independent
activities.
Reading- Students reading
below level P should have 2 books in their Communication Bag at their reading
level, to practice at home each night. Students reading above level P should
have a chapter book in their bag or that they keep at home, to read each night.
During Guided Reading this week, each small group will meet with me as we continue
to explore the special text features of nonfiction books/texts. Please
encourage your child to read nonfiction texts at home this week.
Word Work- Each student will complete
sorting activities related to their own differentiated list of words. This
child-centered approach replaces traditional spelling tests and helps students
recognize and learn how to apply sound, pattern, and meaning in their sorts and
other text forms. You will find a copy of this list in the Communication Bag when
your child begins a new list this week.
Numeracy- Our whole-class lessons this week will focus on perimeter
for grade 3 and perimeter and area for grade 4 students. During Guided Math,
students will finish up the Unit 7 assessment related to Statistic and
Probability. During math stations, students will also work in groups to
complete activities/games that review math facts for addition/subtraction and
multiplication/division.
Here is a short video explaining area
and perimeter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hFhL5h0Woo
Science- This week we continue our exploration of ecosystems as we
learn more about food chains, consumers/producers/decomposers.
Homework
The homework assigned is an extension
of class instruction and meant for extra practice. Completed activities can be
kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with me,
please do so.
Reading- read aloud (even to yourself!) for 20 minutes each
night. Complete the reading log each night and remember to have it signed. Talk
to someone about the Connections you make when you read (memories of
experiences, books you have read, questions you have etc.)
Word Work- Students are still working on last week’s list of words
from the Words Their Way program; copies were sent home on the Communication
Bag. If you would like suggestions for how to use this list at home, please let
me know. Otherwise, please refer to the activity list that was sent home when
the program began.
Numeracy- Practice math facts each night and have someone quiz you
if possible. Make your own or have a parent create a math worksheet to practice
multiplication and then check using a calculator. Grade 3 students are now
practicing perimeter and grade 4 students are focusing on perimeter and
area. Here’s a great website for
practice worksheets. https://www.homeschoolmath.net/worksheets/area_perimeter_rectangles.php
