What a lovely weekend we just had! I hope all of our mothers enjoyed a special
day on Sunday.
Literacy: Please remember to record the title of the book that your
child reads each night. We will be
focusing on comprehension skills this month as we prepare for the grade 2
literacy assessment that students will write at the end of May. When reading with your child, stop at various
points throughout the book and ask them questions about the story or new
vocabulary words. Please see the list
of comprehension questions that went home last week. You can also practice doing word hunts as
your child reads. They can search for
their No Excuses words, words with two vowels walking, words with a bossy e,
contractions, interesting words that they would like to use in their writing...
the possibilities are endless.
No Excuses words for this week
are: has, if, their, then and where. These are words that students should
be able to read quickly, spell correctly and use correctly in a sentence. We
have worked out way through the grade 2 list so this is our list set of words! Last week we wrote independent pieces about
our long weekends. I will send these
home next week. This week we are
finishing our animal reports.
Almost all of our sunflowers
have now poked through the soil. Now
that we’ve learned about plants and their life cycle we’re going to move on to
learning about the changes animals go through as they progress through their life
cycles.
Math: This week’s numbers of the day will be 147-150.
We
continue to work on selecting appropriate strategies for addition and
subtraction, with students working with equations at their level. Some students
are working with 2 digit equations, some are working with a combination of one
and two digits and some students are working with one digit equations. Regular
practice of the basic math facts (10 partners, doubles, 1more/less) is
beneficial as students are realizing that using mental math is faster than
having to calculate the answer. Please
continue to practice counting coins at home.
Practicing word problems is also beneficial. I had
three quarters, two dimes and three pennies.
I gave my friend 45 cents. How
much money do I have left?
While we
still have some new learning to do in geometry and measurement much of our math
time for the remainder of the year will be spent reviewing and perfecting grade
2 concepts and skills. We have our math
lead, Mrs. Thomas, back with us for a few weeks.
