Week at a Glance May
22-25, 2018 Grade ¾
Dear Parent/Guardian,
This week will be short but packed with activities for
students! Creative Clusters are happening on Wednesday, and Track and Field is
Friday, followed by Leo Hayes Clubs. Also, don’t forget Hot Lunch Order Forms
are due this week!
Beginning Tuesday morning, all grade 4 students will be
completing their Provincial Assessments in the areas of Reading Comprehension,
Science and Math. We will begin the day with a snack, and all students will
have a quiet space and lots of time to complete the assessment. We will
complete only one component each day-45 to 60 minutes.
A friendly reminder to go through your child’s Communication
Bag each night to remove worksheets, fill out the Reading Log and sign any
forms or assessments. Please keep worksheets
at home once you have reviewed them with your child.
If you have any questions or
concerns, please contact me at shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca, or call 453-5422 to schedule a meeting.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Coes

Areas of Focus for May
22-25, 2018
Writing- This week, students will work on independent writing using
prompts from our writing center. They will continue to practice setting up
their page (date, title of piece) and organizing their writing (line under
yesterday’s work instead of skipping a page etc.)
Reading- This week,
students will meet with the teacher to complete a Running Record as we check
for growth in oral reading and comprehension. Reminder: students reading below
level P should have 2 books in their Communication Bag at their reading level,
to practice at home each night. Students reading above level P should have a
chapter book in their bag or that they keep at home, to read each night. If you’re
child cannot tell you their reading level, please email me for an update.
Word Work- Each student will complete
sorting activities related to their own differentiated list of words. This
child-centered approach replaces traditional spelling tests and helps students
recognize and learn how to apply sound, pattern, and meaning in their sorts and
other text forms. You will find a copy of this list in the Communication Bag
when your child begins a new list this week.
Numeracy- This week, all students will be finishing up their
Unit 4 assessment on Measurement. I hope to have these ready to go home by
Thursday! We also begin exploring fractions on Wednesday, as we begin Unit 5. See below for a video about fractions.
Science- This week we begin our unit on Light and its properties.
Students will watch videos, read text, and complete activities related to the
properties of light such as: the difference between reflection and refraction
and transparent/opague/translucent.
Homework
The homework assigned is an extension
of class instruction and meant for extra practice. Completed activities can be
kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with me,
please do so.
Reading- read aloud (even to yourself!) for 20 minutes each
night. Complete the reading log each night and remember to have it signed. Talk
to someone about the Connections you make when you read (memories of
experiences, books you have read, questions you have etc.)
Word Work- Copies of each student’s list of words will be inside
the Communication Bag. If you would like suggestions for how to use this list
at home, please let me know. Otherwise, please refer to the activity list that
was sent home when the program began.
Numeracy- Practice math facts each night and have someone quiz you
if possible. Make your own or have a parent create a math worksheet to practice
multiplication and then check using a calculator. All students are now working
on fractions. Here is a video that explains fractions and the terms we will be
using in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0FZhQ_GkKw.
