Weekly What’s Up: May 21-25, 2018

I hope our families are taking advantage of the glorious weather we’ve been having!  We will begin our Provincial Reading Comprehension assessment on Wednesday, May 23 and will continue writing until Friday, June 1.  The assessment will be administered in small segments over several days to make it more manageable for the students.  We have discussed the assessment in detail and I have stressed that all students need to do is try their best.  You can support your child by making sure they are in bed at a reasonable time, that they have a balanced breakfast and that they are on time each morning for the next two weeks. Thank you for supporting and encouraging your child.

We said goodbye to Tyler last week as he moved.  Happy belated birthday to Braxton!

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night.  We continue to work on comprehension skills.  When reading with your child, stop at various points throughout the book and ask them questions about the story or new vocabulary words.   Please see the list of comprehension questions that went home last week.  You can also practice doing word hunts as your child reads.  They can search for their No Excuses words, words with two vowels walking, words with a bossy e, contractions, interesting words that they would like to use in their writing... the possibilities are endless.

On Friday we like to invite parents to join us at 1:15 as we present our animal reports.  We have learned a lot about what goes into writing a book through this process and the students are eager to share their hard work.  If you are able to join us, please remember to park on the street or in the tennis court and not in the drop off area.  Independent writing pieces will be coming home on Thursday; watch for the orange duo tang.

We are learning about the changes animals go through as they progress through their life cycles.

Math:  This week’s numbers of the day will be 151-154.

We continue to work on selecting appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction, with students working with equations at their level. Some students are working with 2 digit equations, some are working with a combination of one and two digits and some students are working with one digit equations. Regular practice of the basic math facts (10 partners, doubles, 1more/less) is beneficial as students are realizing that using mental math is faster than having to calculate the answer.  Please continue to practice counting coins at home.  Practicing word problems is also beneficial.  Sierra had 62 stickers.  She gave some to her friends and now she has 35.  How many stickers did Sierra give away?  You can also give your child a number and ask them what the equations could be.  The answer is 78.  What could the question be?

We are working on reviewing 2D shapes and are learning about 3D objects.   We have our math lead, Mrs. Thomas, back with us for another week.
