We certainly had an early taste of summer weather on
Thursday and Friday. Students are welcome to have a water bottle on their desk.
Due to the likelihood of sticky spills, I ask that students only bring
water to keep at their desk. Other
beverages can be enjoyed at snack and lunch time.
We filled in all of the dates for special events in June on
the class calendar and it looks like we are in for a busy month! Please check your child’s Communication Bag
for notices and read the newsletters closely.
We are still maintaining our regular class schedule as much as possible and
learning will continue till the end of the year. We also want to put forth our best effort on
year end assessments. Please support
your child by making sure they are coming to school well rested and ready for
the day.
I am very proud of the positive growth mindsets that I saw
during our literacy assessments!
Everyone put their best effort into the assessments and we’re glad to
have it behind us.
Literacy: Please remember to record the title of the book that your
child reads each night. When reading
with your child, stop at various points throughout the book and ask them
questions about the story or new vocabulary words. Please continue to use the list of comprehension
questions that was sent home.
We are continuing our learning
about animal life cycles and about respecting nature. I’m happy to report that all of our
sunflowers have recovered and are looking healthy!
Math: This week’s numbers of the day will be 160-164. At the beginning of May everyone made a
prediction about how many school days we would have. It will be interesting to see what our
closest estimation was!
We
continue to work on selecting appropriate strategies for addition and
subtraction, with students working with equations at their level. Some students
are working with 2 digit equations, some are working with a combination of one
and two digits and some students are working with one digit equations. Regular
practice of the basic math facts (10 partners, doubles, 1more/less) is
beneficial as students are realizing that using mental math is faster than
having to calculate the answer. Please
continue to practice counting coins at home.
Practicing word problems is also beneficial.
Mrs. Burnett gave _____ stickers
to the grade 2 class and ____ stickers to the grade ¾ class. How many stickers did she give out all
together? (fill
in the blanks with numbers that are appropriate for your child’s level) You could also ask them which class was given
the most stickers and how many more did they get?
We are
continuing to work on describing and identifying real world examples of 3D
objects (cylinder, sphere, prism, cone, cube, pyramid). We are also learning about increasing
patterns.
