Week at a Glance September 24-28, 2018

Week at a Glance     September 24-28, 2018   Grade ¾

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the first week of fall! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend J

Please remember to check your child’s Homework/Communication Bag each day for important notices. Marked worksheets are sent home as an update about what we are currently working on. Please remove from the bag and keep these at home for your own information.

Inside your child’s Communication Bag are two levelled books based on their current reading level. Please practice reading these with your child each day and sign your child’s Reading Log each night. Books should be returned to school each day and will be replaced during the week with new ones. Other homework suggestions are listed below.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Coes

Areas of Focus for September 24-28, 2018

Writing- This week, students will complete whole-class activities using the resources in their Writer’s Toolkit.  Students are also wrapping up work on their All About Me book. If you would like to see your child’s Writer’s Toolkit, please drop me a line and I will send it home in the Communication Bag. (shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca)

Reading- Students will meet with me in small groups during Guided Reading, as we read and complete activities using levelled books that match each students’ reading level. Students receive new books at their reading level on Monday and Wednesday this week. Please practice these at home.

Word Work- Each student will choose from a variety of activities related to their differentiated word list for the week. We continue to review their “No Excuse” words from last year. This child-centered approach replaces traditional spelling tests.

Numeracy-  Our whole-class lessons this week will focus on a review of skip counting by 5s and 4s. Students will meet with me in small groups during Guided math as we continue to work on the preassessment for our first math unit. Grade 3 students will be focusing on: Saying the number sequence forward and backward by 4s to 25 and by 5s to 500. Grade 4s continue to work on identifying patterns in multiplication charts and solving an equation that contains a symbol. Everyone will also have lots of chances to play math games with classmates; our focus during games this week will be using our subtracting skills and skip counting.

Science- This week we will continue to explore ideas and concepts related to Plant Growth and Changes. Students will learn about seed dispersal and “the zone of darkness” through videos, experiments and class activities.

Homework

The homework assigned is an extension of class instruction and is meant for extra practice. Completed activities can be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with me, please do so! :)

Reading- Students should read aloud (even to themselves!) for 15 minutes each night. Books at their reading level are in their Communication Bag. They should complete the reading log each night; please remember to sign it and place in the Communication Bag. Talk to your child about what they read and any Connections they made when reading (memories of experiences, related books they have read, questions they have etc.)

Numeracy- Grab a deck of cards and play Addition/Subtraction War with your child. Place cards in a pile and each draw two cards face up. Player with the greatest sum collects the cards.  All face cards are valued at 10. Player with most cards at the end wins.  Practice skip counting by 4s and 5s from a number other than zero.

Writing- Have your child write about their afterschool routines or their favorite afterschool activities. Ask them to read it to you and offer them “a star” (something you enjoyed about it) and “a wish” (something you wish they would add to their writing piece).
