Week at a Glance September 24-28th

Dear Parents/guardians,

Happy Fall! It certainly is starting to get cool outside. Here are a few reminders for the week. Be sure to check communication bags for notes and homework. Students should be reading 15-20 minutes per night and if you can, ask them about what they are reading.

Reminder that a 45$ student fee is due, you can pay online or send money into the school. Our hot lunch order forms for October went home last week and are due back on Thursday, September 27th.

Here are some important dates:

Tuesday September 25th- Estey Afterschool Art program starts for grades 3-5.  Reminder that on Tuesday at 6:30pm the District Education Council will be here to present information around the sustainability study of MAS. We welcome and encourage all parents and community members to attend.

Wednesday September 26th- Cross-Country: The second meet for those signed up in grades 3-5 is at Henry Park. Please arrive by 1:15pm.

Thursday September 27th - Terry Fox walk run at 1pm. We are asking for a $2 donation towards the Terry Fox Foundation.

Friday September 28th- Orange shirt day. Orange shirt day is an opportunity to wear an orange shirt as a symbol of the wrongs done by the residential school system to aboriginal children and communities.

What we are learning this week:

Literacy: We began looking at editing checklists and reviewed things we can improve after we finished out writing (spelling, grammar, punctuation, word choice). We will be looking word choice for different forms of writing.

Math: We continuing focusing on number patters and how to use a table as a strategy to figure out pattern rules. We are also doing some practice with multiplication and place value games. Later on we will be starting some work with equations (ex: ___ + 8 = 25)

Science: We are exploring different habitats. We will look at what these habitats look like, and what can live there.

Health: We are continuing to do lessons on social emotional learning (empathy and how others may be feeling). We will also be starting our unit about physical health.

Extra practice

Here are some ideas for games you can play at home with your child to practice the skills we are currently learning.

Math- If you have a deck of cards you can play multiplication war. This is great practice for multiplication facts. Split the deck in half, each person flips one card. Whoever can multiply the two cards that are flipped gets the card. Whoever has the most cards at the end wins. Ex: If you flip over a 5, your child flips over a 4, whoever says 20 first wins.

French- We are working on school vocabulary right now. This website is a great resource. http://www.french-games.net/

If you hit start -> then when picking a topic you can find a variety including school objects. It goes through a lesson, a game then a little quiz.

Have a good week!
