Weekly What’s Up: November 19-23, 2018

Grade 2 was quite excited about all the snow on the playground.  I think it’s safe to say that winter is here to stay. Please remember that students to come in the morning dressed to play outside.  I also recommend sending in a change of clothes that your child can keep in the classroom.

We are in the home stretch of our kitchen construction.  The theme of the S.T.A.R. student assembly for November is teamwork and Mrs. Burnett has invited our class to talk about how we used teamwork to build our kitchen!  Congratulations to Brock and Hunter on being chosen as the grade 2 S.T.A.R. students for November (this will be revealed at the assembly on Tuesday).

The students have earned their first whole class reward and have chosen “bring a stuffie to school”.  On Thursday, November 22 students may bring one stuffie to school.  The only rule is that it must fit in their book bag.

The time for your parent teacher interview will be included in your child’s report card envelop.  If you are unable to come during your slot, please let myself or Mrs. Yerxa know and we can try to reschedule.  Please go over the report card with your child and celebrate their success this term and discuss goals for the future.  Sign the comment page and return it in the envelop.  The report card is yours to keep.  I look forward to meeting with you!

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night. Your child should be bringing home a book to read each night.

Our No Excuses words for this week are: like, my, then, would and your.  This week’s words provided a great introduction to homophones, words that sound the same but are spelled differently.

While the Christmas books will wait one more week to make their appearance I have begun reading some snow themed books.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 51-54.  You can ask your child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can have them create their own representation.  You can also practice skip counting to that number.

We are continuing to work on 2D shapes and looking for 10 partners and doubles every chance we get.  Our goal is to be able to answer 10 partner and doubles questions ‘in a snap’.  You can practice at home by calling out a number and asking your child to double it or tell you what its 10 partner is. We are also practicing place value to 50 and adding and subtracting with zero.
