Weekly What’s Up: December 10-14, 2018

It’s hard to believe that there are only two weeks of school left before our Christmas break.  The excitement is definitely starting to build!  Our science lead, Mrs. Hirst, visited out class today.  We made baking soda snowmen then she showed us how to use pipettes to drop vinegar onto them.  Our snowmen dissolved!

The class loved learning about Hanukkah last week.  This week we are focusing on the different ways that Christmas is celebrated around the world.  We will also be learning about the religious and secular aspects of Christmas.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night. Your child should be bringing home a book to read each night.

There will be no new No Excuses words this week or next.  We will use this time to review the words we have covered so far.  New words will resume in the new year.

Students will be sharing their family traditions with one another this week and will then be completing a writing activity about their traditions.  We have also been writing letters and cards to Twinkle the reindeer.  She came from the North Pole last week to keep an eye on us.  She is watching for all the ways that we show Christmas spirit to one another.

The class is loving our novel, A Ghost at Christmas Time.  We are learning lots about the differences between modern and Victorian times as the story involves the writing of A Christmas Carol.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 64-68.  You can ask your child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can have them create their own representation.  You can also practice skip counting to that number.

We are continuing to work on doubles and doubles plus one facts and on representing numbers to 50 in several different ways.  We are also learning about equality and inequality and how to represent equal and not equal groups.  Students are enjoying using popsicle sticks to make tally marks and playing lots of Christmas themed games to practice doubles, adding and subtracting.
