Weekly What’s Up: March 11-15, 2019

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable break (once the shovelling was done).  It’s nice to be back to our routine ant to finally have a Monday together.

We want to welcome Jayden to our grade 2 family.  The rest of the class has been eagerly awaiting his arrival.

Please remember to send an extra pair of socks and mitts with your child as I foresee a lot of soggy recesses in the future.  Students are also welcome to leave a change of clothes in the classroom.

Literacy:  Please continue to listen to your child read/read to them each night.  When you are reading with your child try stopping throughout the book to ask them questions about what is happening, how they think the characters are feeling and if there are words that they don’t understand.  We are focusing on making personal connections to the story during our read alouds.

Our No Excuses words for this week are: came, how, mother, saw and were.  We will continue learning about contractions.  While you are reading you can have your child look for contractions and ask them what words were put together to make that contraction.

In writing we are working on adding details to our writing using adjectives.  We want to paint a picture in the reader’s head.  They are loving writing ‘stretch sentences’.  I give them a simple sentence and they write their own detailed version.  When we share with the class we can see how different people can interpret the same thing in different ways.

Ex: The girl ate.      The little girl ate breakfast with her mom in the early morning at a hotel.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 103-107.  You can ask your child to show you the number as tens and ones, get them to skip count to that number, make an addition or subtraction equation with that number as the answer, etc.

We are continuing to work on representing numbers to 100 in several different ways.  Please practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Students are continuing to work on identifying coins by their name and value.  Some students are beginning to work on adding two digit numbers while others are continuing to work on building their mental math strength with sums to 20.  We will begin working on our measurement unit this week by talking about non standard units, how to use them and what challenges we might encounter.  What can we use to measure how long/tall something is?  A shoe?  A paper clip?  Mrs. Thomas is also working with us to practice asking questions in math.  If the answer is 27, what could the question be?  We are working toward making our own board games (with math task cards) as a math project.

Our math lead Mrs. Thomas introduced us to a website that the class loved!  Gregtangmath.com has several games that are at our level and the website will work on a tablet.
