October newsletter

Good morning! Below is the October newsletter, that was sent home at the beginning of October

Good afternoon parents of the fabulous 5s,
Here are some important updates/notes from the grade 5 classroom, for the month of October.

News:
- MAS is now a peanut friendly school, until further notice!
- Thank you to all parents who have signed up for REMIND.COM. It has been very successful so far, and I have been sending home the Mini Prof questions most evenings, for additional practice
- Students did a WONDERFUL job on their million dollar projects. I was very impressed with their financial decisions.

Notes:
- A reminder to send in the student fee! It is $35 per student, and this money will go towards the purchase of supplies during the school year.

- The school is quite chilly, and the weather tends to vary. I would suggest sending layers!
- The October book order has been sent home. Please return all orders before Friday, October 21st!
- A reminder that there is no school on October 6th, 7th, or 10th, due to PD days and Thanksgiving.

What are we learning?
French: In French class, our review unit on classroom vocabulary was very successful! Students are finishing up the unit on their extended family, and we will soon begin a DELICIOUS unit on food! Students will learn to express their likes and dislikes, and will learn about healthy food choices.

We will incorporate Halloween, and Thanksgiving vocabulary as well, as part of an ongoing unit on holidays.

Math: In Math, grade 5 students are responsible for numbers up to 1 000 000. We have completed our unit on Patterns, and two assessments have been sent home for your review (please sign and return.) Students are now engaged in the "Whole Numbers" unit, and are reviewing strategies for multiplication and division, as well as place value. Soon, we will begin 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication, followed by 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication.

Students should be reviewing their multiplication and division facts nightly, as these are KEY components of this unit.

Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Liz McCabe
