Homework

The homework assigned is an extension of class instruction and meant for extra practice. I am not asking for it to be handed in, however, if there is an activity you would like to share with me please do so.  I will be checking your reading logs throughout the week J

Reading- read aloud (even to yourself!) for at least 10 minutes each night. Complete the reading log each night. Remember to have it signed J Please keep a book in your communication bag if you do not have one at home.

Word Work- study your word list each night. Try some of the activities on the Word Work Handout or visit some of the websites below. Try making your own flash cards and practicing with a friend or family member.

Numeracy- Study math facts each night and have someone quiz you if possible. Try creating your own flash cards or visiting the numeracy websites below.

Areas of Focus for September 18-22

Writing- Students will review what they have learned about the Daily 5 program and student and teacher expectations for activities. Students will explore their “Writer’s Toolkit”, which contains everything they need to get writing! We continue our focus on the 6 +1 Traits of Writing with mini lessons on Conventions and Word Choice.

Reading-This week, grade ¾ students will have lots of chances to read to others as we practice our reading strategies. I will continue conferencing with students to determine areas of focus for comprehension and current reading level.

Word Work- Students will explore ten new words each week through a variety of activities and will complete a quick quiz at the end of the week to “show what they know”. Please look for last week’s quiz for you to sign and return. As part of Daily 5, students have lots of chances to complete word work activities throughout this week.

Numeracy- All students will explore activities related to increasing and decreasing patterns. This week students will participate in math stations and small-group guided math lessons. I will continue conferencing with students to determine their areas of strength and areas we will work on in Math this year.

To practice and improve knowledge of math facts, students complete a 5-minute math fact recall activity (math drill) each day.  This activity is differentiated for each student and allows students move on to more challenging facts at their own rate. Mental math strategies for addition will be reviewed and practiced this week as well.

Social Sciences: This week grade 3 students will continue to explore the concepts of how to describe where New Brunswick is in the world and in Canada. Grade 4 students will learn more about what exploration is and how we can explore.

Personal Wellness: Students will work in small groups to discuss classroom expectations/rules and what makes us unique.
