Areas of Focus for September
18-22
Writing- Students will share what they know about all 6+1 Traits of writing
this week. We will explore how to use an editing checklist to improve our
writing. Students will discuss what writing should look like in grade 3 and 4
and view examples of grade level writing. We will work in groups to determine
what makes each writing piece “appropriate” or “strong” and how we can apply
that to our own writing.
Reading-This week, grade ¾ students will continue conferencing with me to
determine areas of focus for comprehension and current reading level. Students
will have time to read to others, listen to reading and read to self as we
continue our mini lessons on how to choose a “good fit” book.
Word Work- Students will explore ten new words each week through a variety
of activities and will complete a quick quiz at the end of the week to “show
what they know”. Please check the communication bag for last week’s quiz for
you to sign and return.
Numeracy-I will continue conferencing with students to determine their
areas of strength and areas we will work on in Math this year. In grade 3,
students are working on demonstrating an understanding of increasing and
decreasing patterns by describing, extending and comparing patterns. In grade
4, students are working on identifying patterns found in tables and charts and
how to represent and describe patterns. Students will work both independently
and with others, as well as participate in small-group guided math lessons.
Social Sciences: This week all students will explore what
they know and want to learn about Canada. Grade ¾ students will review the
names of provinces and territories in Canada and how to label a map of Canada.
