Sustainability Studies

Anglophone West School District is responsible, under the Education Act (the Act), for determining the educational infrastructure requirements within its region and managing school operations.

In order to fulfill this responsibility, the District Education Council (DEC), in accordance with the requirements of the Act, may from time to time have to undertake a sustainability study of a school.

A sustainability study follows a process outlined in the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) provincial Policy 409: Multi-year School Infrastructure Planning. This policy serves as a foundation for determining the sustainability of a school, taking into account many aspects, such as

  •          Enrolment
  •          Health and Safety
  •          Quality Education and Services
  •          Transportation
  •          Impact on Community
  •          Finances
  •          Economic Development
  •          Impact on Other Schools

The DEC must hold three public meetings as part of the sustainability study of a school.

The first meeting will be for a presentation of information about the school, in line with, but not limited to, the categories above.  The second meeting will allow for interested individuals, stakeholders and parties to present information for consideration in the decision-making process. The third meeting will occur at a regularly scheduled monthly public DEC meeting.  At this time, the DEC will discuss the study and vote on a final recommendation.  That recommendation will be one of three possible outcomes as outlined in Policy 409 (Section 6.4.2):

  1.             Maintain the status-quo at the school.
  2.             Provide for repairs to the school.
  3.             Close the school and move students to another school for their continued education.

The minister of Education and Early Childhood Development must approve recommendation #2 or #3; if made by the DEC.

The minister shall normally respond to a recommendation to close a school within a period no less than 30 days and not exceeding 60 days.
