Our entire school has made a commitment is to do something about bullying before it happens. Prevention and intervention are paramount to the process. Students and staff strive for a bully free environment designed to help teachers create a positive environment where everyone feels safe, accepted, and valued. Our parent community is very important in reinforcing the information provided at school. Students have been informed that compassion is not something that just happens, it must be learned. We teach each other compassion by treating others with respect. When we learn to respect others it is most likely that we will find people much more respectful to us. Bullying is not an issue when we consistently demonstrate compassion and respect for one another. This also applies when using cell phones to text messages or communicating using computers. We should always communicate on line in the same manner that we would communicate in person. Cyber bullying is an issue that potentially impacts all of us.
The school community has had an opportunity to extend learning opportunities regarding compassion through a couple of initiatives most recently as we offered a student directed program facilitated by Mrs. Langille called “Beyond The Hurt” and presentations by our Community Police Officer Const. Tony McCrae. Both were very well received and student feedback is very positive.
Our community will benefit from the support of many new Red Cross Certified Babysitters as students from the school will soon be completing their babysitting course. Special thanks to Mrs. Martin for making this opportunity possible for our school community.

Congratulations to all the staff and students that participated in the 11th annual Brent Kelly Memorial Run/Walk held on April 25th at the Irving Nature Park. The school was very well represented at the event as usual and the support to this cause is very well appreciated.

On April 25th our school held The Amazing Race Earth Challenge. It was very well received! Thanks to all who helped make this event possible. A HUGE – Shout –out to Mrs. McNulty and the students from UNBSJ for organizing this fun filled afternoon of travelling around the earth!

Our school drama club members under the careful supervision of Mr. Lawrence are fine tuning things for their production scheduled to take place on May 13th and 14th.  This year’s production of “The Bremen Town Musicians” will be presented to the local grade 5 students from the feeder schools (St Patrick’s School, Havelock School and Seawood School) on the morning of May 13th. An evening performance for the parents/public is set for Wednesday, May 13th. The support for set construction, props and costumes is very well appreciated.

Very special thanks go to all those generous individuals who took their time and energy to track down “Pat on the Back” prizes for the students of the school. Your efforts are very well appreciated by all in our school community.

NEW LUNCH PROGRAM
Last week we started a new lunch program with Stone Soup Catering. The new menu is created in conjunction with Canada’s Food Guide and the province’s Nutritional Guidelines for Schools. As always your feedback is much appreciated.

YEAR-END CELEBRATION
It’s that time of year again when we start discussing guidelines for what students can and cannot wear to the Year-end Semi-formal Celebration Dinner and Dance. Even though many of the students call this a graduation dance or prom, it is and always has been referred to as a general Celebration of Learning and Grade 8 Farewell.
SO WHAT TO WEAR?
Girls
  • If strapless- it has to be properly fitted
  • The dress cannot be any shorter than the length of their fingertips, elongated arms down both sides of their body, this includes slits on the side, front and or back
  • No sweetheart necklines
  • No exposed backs- The back of the dress must be up to your shoulder blades
  • No exposed midriff or back cut outs
If these requirements are not met when students arrive for the dinner/dance, girls will be asked to wear a shawl or be sent home to change into something more suitable
Boys
  • Shirts with collars
  • No torn, ripped, or soiled pants
  • No gym pants, track pants
  • Dress shoes or clean sneakers
  • No jeans or shorts
  • No hats

We are asking that parents help support a safe school environment by reminding your child/children of the following expectations:
  • Schools are scent free areas as colognes and perfumes do cause serious breathing issues and headaches for students and staff. All students and staff must comply with the policy. Please remind your child(ren) to avoid these products when coming to school and please ensure that they do not bring the products to school.
  • Confrontations between students are always a serious matter and must be addressed by all in our community. Please advise your child that physical confrontations or serious cyber situations will be reported directly to school administration and the Police.
  • Attendance at school is mandatory and students that fail to report are not meeting with the expectations clearly outlined in the Education Act of New Brunswick. Students that are absent from school for any reason must provide a signed written excuse from their guardian/parent upon their return to school.
  • Students are not to hang around the school grounds after dismissal unless waiting for a bus in the designated area at the front of the building.

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
