March 2017

Parents are advised that Report Cards will be going home on Monday, March 27th and Student Led Conferences will take place on Thursday, March 30th (5:30 – 8:00) and March 31st (8:45 – 11:00). It is important for parents to take note that the student progress reporting system will change next year and information regarding the planned provincial report card will be provided through the school to parents during this term’s reporting period.

A reminder to all involved that the focus of the Student Led Conference is to be positive and recognize student achievement and learning accomplishments for the term. Whereas students take responsibility for learning through this process, teachers and parents work together to guide students to devise a growth plan for improvement in meeting with academic goals. This is an extremely important celebration of learning and all students are to participate in these conferences with their parents/caregivers.

The grade 8 students throughout the school district were offered the opportunity to visit high school “Open Houses” in February. The high school registration forms have gone home were filled out accordingly and have been submitted to the school district office. Whereas enrolment caps are in place at the high schools, students wishing to attend a school outside of their school zone must apply. Notices from high schools regarding placement will be forwarded in early April. For further details about the process please contact your child’s teacher or school administration.

Students should realize that the teachers at the school are available every day after school to help students get caught up on missed work or to clarify issues regarding assignments or assessments. The school is also very interested in arranging support for students who require the assistance. It is our hope that these measures will help all students meet with success this academic school year.

Parents should be aware that if students have cell phones or electronic devices at school, the school is in no way responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property and the devices must be turned off and out of sight during the school day. Students that fail to comply with the Policy will have the device removed and parents will have to come to the school to obtain the device at the end of the day. It is essential that all students also recognize the expectations for privacy while at school by not taking videos or pictures, or sharing videos or pictures of anyone. Your cooperation to the protection of the positive learning environment is very well appreciated by all.

All students at Beaconsfield are encouraged to stay for lunch at the school but they must conduct themselves according to the expectations set out by their homeroom teachers, student classroom monitors and the school administration. Those students who fail to comply will not benefit from the volunteered supervision of staff members at lunch. Only those students who have an official lunch form signed by their parents/guardian are allowed to leave the school grounds at lunch. Because the school expects and encourages students to remain at school at lunch, parents allowing students to leave the school at lunch assume full responsibility for their child (children) while in the community.

Students in the school have been very involved in the heritage fair projects, written abstracts and presentations over the last few weeks and their efforts have certainly bred some very interesting learning opportunities related to the celebration of 150 years since Canada became a nation. The school wide heritage fair was held on March 1st and students will be assessed on the written abstracts and verbal presentations as part of their Language Arts and Social Studies assessments.

Students planning on participating in the school excursion to Ottawa are beginning to get excited about this opportunity as they will be participating in some really neat learning opportunities. Whereas this is the 150 year celebration of Canada, Ottawa will be a great place to be in order to celebrate this year in particular.

The staff and students had a great deal of fun during our Annual Winter Carnival that ran from February27th to March 3rd.  Each day of the week had a theme and then students participated in an “activity enrichment” day on Thursday, March 2nd. The staff had worked very diligently once again to make arrangements for a diverse selection of activities such as swimming, skating, badminton, curling, cooking, bowling and a visit to the Vegas Family Entertainment Center or the Off line Board Game Café.

The school will host a presentation from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) on Monday March 27th thanks to Mrs. Ackroyed who organized this opportunity. MADD Canada’s School Assembly Programs have been bringing high energy and alcohol impaired driving awareness and risk reduction messaging to the world of Education since 1994. The programs are designed to communicate directly with young people on their level and in their language and encourage them to take a closer look at their values and perceptions.
The drama club has been working hard in preparation for the spring production of “The Lizard of Oz” written and produced by Mr. John Lawrence. The date of the actual production is yet to be determined but early May is the typical date for our school’s spring drama production. Details on the development will be forwarded as we move into our spring season and members of our community are encouraged to get involved in supporting the developmental process as there is a lot of work involved in preparing for the 3 performances over a two day period.

Finally, parents are reminded to help support a safe school environment by reinforcing the following expectations with your child/children:
  • Throwing snow on the way to and from school, and while they are in the school yard is strictly prohibited. The police will be contacted immediately should students fail to comply with this expectation.
  • Students must dress appropriately for the weather as all students remain outdoors in the morning until 8:20 and go out for 20 minutes every day at lunch unless there are extreme weather warnings.
  • Parents should help students select a safe route to and from school so that they can avoid walking on roadways. Please contact the City of Saint John Works Department with any concerns about public safety on the sidewalks

Yours truly

Arthur P. Sisk
