Belleisle Elementary School Emergency Preparedness Plan

Purpose: This plan is meant to offer a safety response to a crisis. Given that there are many forms of crisis, it focuses on locating all students and school personnel out of harm's way. It falls under the direction of the School Emergency Response Team and/or the Traumatic Events Response Team:

Carol Trainor (Principal)

Cathy McWhirter (Administrative Assistant)

Heather Wilson (Vice-Principal)

 Nila Perry (Resource & Methods)

Robert Mather (Guidance)

Lionel Gautreau (Head Custodian)

All staff not having class supervision responsibilities are to assist the team under the direction of the Principal and Vice-Principal. At BES the Principal is expected to provide primary leadership at all times. In his/her absence, leadership will be assumed by the Vice-Principal. If both principal and vice-principal are absent, leadership will be assumed by Nila Perry, Resource & Methods teacher.

The leader and the SER team will decide on the appropriate level of evacuation.

Stage 1 will see students and staff move to various outside location on the school's property (Fire Drill Locations).

Stage 2 will see students and staff move to a central outside location on the school's property (Fire Drill Locations).

Stage 3 will see students and staff move to a location(s) off the school's property (Off Site Evacuation Location BHRS)

Staying Within the Building:

Procedures for staying in the building due to severe weather, or a major accident outside of the building but within the community will include notifying parents, the District Emergency Response Team, and/or local EMO. In addition, arrangements for food, bedding and other necessities will have to be made and main gathering and sleeping areas will be designated.

Procedures for remaining within the building as a safety measure against an intruder(s) include notifying staff and students to clear the corridors and remain behind locked classroom doors, or to clear the building and grounds as quickly as possible. The message given over the PA will be "Belleisle Elementary School is in LOCK DOWN." Staff and students would remain in their classrooms until told otherwise. In addition, the School Team would call 911, the School District and/or local EMO.

These procedures will be practiced throughout the school year. Because of the traumatic nature of them, however, staff and students will be notified in advance of the day, but not the time, that the practices will occur. In addition, post event debriefing should be considered to reduce fears and gather valuable information to improve this safety procedure.

Communications:

The Principal and the Administrative Assistant will be respoonsible for notifying the students and school personnel, parents, the appropriate District personnel and emergency response team professionals through school intercom, telephones/voice mail, fax machine, internet and radio.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this outline and/or the Emergency Plan in general please contact the administration at (506) 485-3025.

Respectfully

Carol Trainor
