This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk.
The word of the week was subaqueous which means underwater. This week as a result of staff input, we have made changes to our bell schedule. In the morning students will be playing outside for an extra 5 minutes, the bell will ring at 8:15 for students to come inside (rather than 8:10). At the noon hour, students will also have an extra 5 minutes for outdoor play. Students will play outside from 11:50-12:15 and eat from 12:15-12:35. Instructional time will not be impacted by these changes.
BOOK SWAP: As part of National Literacy Day we had a great book swap. We were even able to include our Preschool students as we had many preschool books donated as well.
PINK SHIRT DAY (OPTIONAL ONLY): Orders due by Jan 31st. This is optional, as we know students may be interested if they know they do not have any pink however, many others have a myriad of pink to choose from! Pink day is later in the month (February 22nd). The school does not receive any amount of money for this but it does support local Key Industries which provides services to empower persons with a disability to achieve social, community and economic independence.
Writers in the School Program: On Monday we welcome author Zach Hapeman to our school to speak to the students about his work as a poet. Zach Hapeman is a writer and illustrator working in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Zach loves to engage children and youth with lively readings and discussion about the elements of poetry (structure, form, rhythm, expressive devices). He favours poems that are silly and weird, with special focus on those that employ inventive use of language and structure.
Good Morning! Breakfast/Transition program: Mr. Raymond and Mme. Vallis invite those students with permission to meet in the art room/breakfast room each morning between 7:50-8:20AM. Please remind your child if you have determined they require this service.
FEBRUARY CALENDAR & NEWSLETTER: Please stay tuned for the Febraury edition of the HES Calendar and newsletter. It will be sent on Wednesday by email. If you require or wish to have a hard copy, please call Mrs. Nancy Long in the office and she will send one home with your child.

News from the LIBRARY: We are still looking for more HES books! Students, would you please look in your rooms, in your backpack, and in your desk at school.  Parents, would you please look in all those nooks and crannies at home, or perhaps vehicle, where we typically place things until they are returned. We are thanking you, in advance, for your best detective work in finding these missing books!
News from the HOME & SCHOOL: Staff appreciation is the week of February 13th-17th. The Home and School group is looking for parents to help with this fun tradition. Please email Hampton Elementary Home and School (hes.homeandschool@gmail.com) for more details and to get involved. A separate email had been sent out earlier this week.

Our weekly Hawk Squawk is always posted on our school website under the Synrevoice tab!
Coming up next week: Feb 6-10th Safe Internet Week

Have a great weekend!

Heritage Week in NB This year Heritage Week in NB is Feb. 13 – Feb. 20 and the Kings Co. Museum wants to help celebrate by hosting a Heritage Contest for students at local area schools, including Hampton Elementary School.
How students can participate: The Kings Co. Museum has a blog called 100 Hidden Histories which can be viewed at 100HiddenHistories.blogspot.ca. Here’s the task:  students will find an object in their family that is at least 50 years old and write a short story about it.  Here is what should be included:
  • A description of what the object is
  • What is its use
  • Where it was made
  • Who it belonged to (has it been passed down from generation to generation)
  • Why is it still in their family
  • What it means to them
  • Any other interesting fact about the object
All submissions should be submitted in either MS Word or PDF format and be no longer than one page.  Pictures of the object from different angles need to be included as well, including any markings or engravings on the object. There will be one winner from each area school and the prize will be a $25 gift certificate from a local business.  The best submissions will be included in our 100 Hidden Histories blog in 2017.  Other submissions will be shared via our Facebook page.
How to enter: Students must email their work to the museum at kingscm@nbnet.nb.ca by end of day Thursday, Feb. 9.  The following information needs to be included:
  • Student name, School the student attends, What grade the student is in.
  • Name of the student’s homeroom teacher.
  • Email address where the student can be contacted for prize notification.  The Kings Co. Museum will also use this email address to notify students if their submission will be included in our 100 Hidden Histories blog in 2017.
  • The write-up of the object (maximum one page) submitted in MS Word of PDF format.
  • Pictures of the object.
Winners will be notified through the email address they used to send their entry and you will be copied.  Arrangements will be made to have their certificates and prizes presented to them by a member of the Kings Co. Historical and Archival Society.
