This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk.

Today was a great School Wide Clean Up day in recognition of Earth Day. Students worked around the school to collect garbage, compost foliage in our flower beds and make HES clean again! Students were also spotted writing about Earth Day around the school. We have two grade 4 classes attending a field trip to Crane Mountain learning about where our waste goes and also how to minimize the waste by Recycling and Composting.

PARENT POWER NIGHT: Thank you to those families who were able to attend our annual Parent Power Night! We had a great group of dedicated and supportive families who took advantage of this session. The panelists spoke of the importance of kids putting away their technology and getting outside for activity breaks and also connecting with family members. Sometimes anxiety presents as anger, defiance and misbehavior. It is important to allow your child to experience anxiety. You can’t promise that your child won’t fail a test or that she won’t fall when skating, but you can express confidence that she’s going to be ok, she will be able to manage it and that as she faces her fears, the anxiety level will drop over time.  This gives the child confidence that your expectations are realistic and that you aren’t going to ask her to do something she can’t handle.

Active Transportation: With the nicer weather, we want to encourage students to use active transportation to get to school. It was great to see the bikes come out the last couple of weeks and we know exercise is the most effective way to improve memory and attention at school. Student Interns: Ms. Kayla Allaby is completing her term with us at in 3/4 Kennedy. We wish her well on her journey as a teacher! We are welcoming an NBCC student intern who will be learning with us for the next 8 weeks.

Courtyard Ducks: Our courtyard ducks have returned and were sighted by Mrs. Chase courting once again. If you recall last year, the momma duck nested and ended up hatching her ducklings in the courtyard!
Wednesday, April 25th is another half day for students with staff professional learning in the afternoon.

Pay It Forward Day: To wrap up April, we will acknowledge Pay It Forward Day on Friday with Random Acts of Kindness.

Volunteer Breakfast: On Thursday, May 3rd we welcome all volunteers to our Appreciation Breakfast from 7:45-8:45. There will be coffee and treats as well as a short performance by some of our students. This is a small way for us to thank you for your involvement in our school and for all you do!

News from the Home and School: The Home and School will continue to accept entries for the Big Fair Day ticket design. Please ask students to bring their drawings to the office early next week!

After School Activities: On Friday, Robotics continues with the Spring term (session #4/10). There are still a few spots remaining in this great enrichment program for aspiring engineers! It is open to both NEW and CONTINUING Robotics students and runs for 10 weeks. http://www.robonorthamerica.com/course/course_01_beginner.php
