Hi everyone,
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary with an important reminder for all families of our next year’s kindergarten class.  Our Welcome to Kindergarten session is happening on Thursday, January 18th from 3:00-4:00pm. This is the first session that your child will come to school to spend time in a kindergarten classroom.
At this session, both you and your child will go to a kindergarten classroom to get a taste of the kindergarten experience. Together, you will use materials designed to support kindergarten readiness. At the end of the session, your child will be given the bag of materials to take home to use.
It is very important that you fully interact with your child during this session so come prepared to cut, colour, read, count, glue, etc. We also ask that you please try and make it a “phone free” zone so that you really can give your child your focused attention.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at the school. We look forward to seeing you at our Welcome to Kindergarten session!

Hi everyone,
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary with your Tuesday talk mail.
Our Christmas concerts are tomorrow at the Hampton Baptist church. Kindergarten students perform their concert at 9:00am. The grade 1 and grade 2 students perform their concert at 10:30am. If you can, please bring a non-perishable item for the food bank as your admission fee.
The winner of our kindergarten VIP seating and parking was Jessica Sanford and the winner of our grade 1 and 2 VIP seating and parking was Sarah Brannon. Congratulations to our winners! Thanks to everyone who bought tickets on this.
For safety reasons, we ask that you please do not take your child from the church. If you wish to pick up your child after their concert, please wait until they return to the school.
Home and School thanks everyone who supported their Kredl’s Produce Pack and mini auction fundraisers. Kredl’s packs can be picked up at Kredl’s between December 20th and 22nd. When you pick them up, you will be asked to sign for them. The mini auction raised $863.00. All money raised will be used toward inclusive learning and play initiatives.
Friday is a half day for students. Buses will start leaving at 11:00am.
That’s it for today! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at our Christmas concerts!

Hi everyone,
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary with your Tuesday talk mail.
Today is our last skating day. Thank you to everyone who helped us with skating!
Mad Science is holding their last session after school today.
Tomorrow, we are having our second Wednesday in December enrichment sessions. Thank you to all who have come to share your time and talents with us.
A reminder that our Christmas concerts are being held next Wednesday at the Hampton Baptist Church. Our kindergarten students are performing their concert at 9:00am. Our grade 1 and 2 students are performing their concert at 10:30am. These are 2 completely different concerts. In years past, we have done the same concert twice at 2 different times. This year we are not doing that so please make sure you come to your child’s scheduled time. Tickets on VIP parking and seating were sent home yesterday, or will be coming home today with your child.
A message from your Home and School:
There are so many wonderful donations coming in to support our Inclusive Education & Play Initiative! We currently have 20+ items to auction just in time for Christmas.  Support our initiative and get some of your Christmas shopping finished up at the same time.
Our first auction is scheduled to run from December 12th through to December 18th, 2017 and will be managed through Facebook.  If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, and participating, please join our Facebook group called “Dr. A.T. Leatherbarrow – Inclusive Education & Play Initiative” for details.
Happy bidding!
That’s it for today! Thanks for listening!

Hi everyone,
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary with your Tuesday talk mail.
Thank you so much for coming to Parent/Teacher interviews last week! It was wonderful to see so many of you here. Thanks as well for supporting our book fair. All profits from the book fair will be used to buy new books for our school library.
Just in time for the holidays! Home and School is selling fresh produce packs from Kredls for $40.00. $10.00 from each box sold will go directly to our Inclusive Education and Play Initiative. Information sheets are being sent home with your child today. As always, participation is at your discretion.
Mad Science is being held after school today.
Our students will be going skating on December 5 and December 12. The costs of skating are covered by your school supply fee. If you haven’t paid, please make sure that you do so. In order to skate, children need skates, a helmet, snow pants and mittens or gloves. If you are able to volunteer with skating, please contact your child’s teacher. Any parent who wants to join children on the ice must wear a helmet and skates. Unfortunately, because of insurance purposes, no siblings or apparatus designed to assist students with their skating, are permitted on the ice.
Looking ahead: Our Kindergarten Christmas concert is being held at 9:00am, Wednesday, December 20th, at the Hampton Baptist Church. Our Grade 1 and Grade 2 concert is being held on the same day at the same location at 10:30am. Home and School will be selling tickets on VIP seating and parking in the next couple of weeks.
That’s all for today! Thanks for listening! Have a terrific Tuesday!

Hi everyone,
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary with your Tuesday talk mail. Report cards went home yesterday! We are very proud of our students and how hard they are working. Thank you for all that you do to support their success every day!
Parent/teacher meetings are Thursday from 4:00-7:00pm and Friday from 8:30-10:30am. All appointments have been scheduled and your time should have been in your report card envelope. If you didn’t receive a time, please contact us so that we can give you one.
The Scholastic Book Fair will be set up in the front lobby during parent/teacher times if you would like to make a purchase. Students will get a preview of the books that will be available on Wednesday.
Thank you so much for supporting our Java Moose coffee fundraiser. Coffee can be picked up during parent teacher interviews. Home and School will be in the staff room on Thursday after 5:00 and in the gym on Friday morning with your orders. Next week, Home and School is sending home an information sheet on Kredl’s holiday produce packs if you are interested in purchasing these for the holiday season.
Our grade 2 choir is performing at the Empty Stocking Fund this Saturday between 1:30-2:00pm. If you would like to send in a donation for the Empty Stocking Fund, the choir will be making one on behalf of the school.
Just a reminder to please send your child to school with a warm jacket, mittens and a hat. This time of year they can even begin to wear their snow pants. It can be very cold outside and they are outside playing from 45 minutes to over an hour every day.
Finally, we will be starting skating in December. Times have not yet been confirmed, but I wanted to give you lots of time to find skates and a helmet for your child. We will send along a skating schedule as soon as it is confirmed.
That’s all for today! We are looking forward to seeing you at Parent/teacher interviews! Have a wonderful evening!

Hello everyone,
It's Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary with your Tuesday talk mail.
Report cards are being sent home next Monday. This will be the first time that schools in Anglophone South will be sending home the new provincial report card, and it will look considerably different than in year's past. You will notice that the report card is now 4 pages long. The first two pages are your child’s actual progress report. The third page is the report card key to explain the marking scale and the 4th page is the parent/student response form that you will return to the school. You also will notice that students will receive a 1, 2, 3, or 4 to indicate their achievement on curricular outcomes expected for this point in the year.
I included an attachment and a section in our November newsletter to help to explain the new 1, 2, 3, 4 rubric. Please take a minute to look at that analogy of riding a bike as it clearly explains this new reporting system.
In more academic terms, a 1 means that a student has not met the curricular expectation for this point in the year. The student is working below appropriate achievement. A 2 means that they are on their way, and that they are approaching the expectation, but are not quite there. Their work shows a combination of appropriate and below appropriate achievement. If your child is receiving a 1 or a 2 in any curricular strand, your child's teacher will call you before report cards come home to let you know and to discuss why, and how we can work together to help your child more successfully meet curricular expectations.
A 3 means your child is showing appropriate achievement and meeting the curriculum expectations for this point in the year. Our goal would be to have most students at a 3, and we would expect most students will be in this category. A 3+ means your child is showing proficient achievement, and is excelling in some learning expectations.
A 4 means that your child has consistently demonstrated work that excels curricular expectations, even in new contexts. A 4 is certainly achievable but would not be as common at this point in the year when students need much more confidence and independence to independently work beyond curricular expectations. A 4+ means that your child is consistently and independently demonstrating learning that surpasses grade level expectations. This category was described to me as something Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory would receive.
Today, your child is coming home with a form asking you for your preferred parent/teacher day. Please fill this out and return it by Thursday so that we can send you a scheduled 10 minute appointment time in your child's report card.
Mad Science is after school today and PSSC meets tonight at 6:30pm.
If you are interested in volunteering at our Book Fair nest week, we still have many ‘spots’ open for those available to help out:
Thursday, Nov. 23, 10:00-12:00 p.m
Thursday, Nov. 23, 4:00-7:00 p.m.
Friday, Nov. 24, 8:15-10:30 a.m.
Please call the school if you are available.
That’s it for today. Thanks for listening to this very lengthy, but important message. If you have any further questions, please call me. Have a wonderful day!

Happy Halloween!
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your Tuesday talk mail.  We certainly have silly hats and crazy hair here today!
Thanks to those of you who have already nominated a neighbour. I have had the pleasure of speaking to some new people eager to volunteer because of this campaign. Thanks for your support!
We have 73 students already registered for next year’s kindergarten classes! If you know anyone who should have registered, but hasn’t, please ask them to come to the school and register their child. Hi everyone,
It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your Tuesday talk mail.
Our Terrific Tuesday movie is today after school. Please be here at 3:30pm to pick up your child. Kindergarten students can be picked up in the kindergarten wing, grade 1 students can be picked up in their classrooms, or the library, and grade 2 students can be picked up in the gym.
Tonight, students will be bringing home a “Nominate a Neighbour” invitation. We are hoping that we will be able to strengthen community partnerships and build our volunteer base with this initiative.
I want to say a huge thank you to all of you who supported Home and School’s Norcard campaign. Home and School made $2800.00 which will be used to help fund our inclusive education and play initiative.
The opportunity to order Java Moose coffee is back by popular demand! Home and School will send home information on this later this week or the first of next week.
A reminder that tomorrow, students will be dismissed at 11:00am as all staff in the district will be participating in professional development.
On Friday, Harveys studios will be coming to do photo retakes.
Finally, next Tuesday is Halloween. We ask that all costumes be saved for treat or treating. Instead of costumes, students can wear a silly hat, crazy hair or a combination of both! Your child’s teacher will send home specific plans for activities that will be happening in their class that day.
That’s it for today! Enjoy these unbelievable temperatures!
