Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine from Leatherbarrow Primary.

The rapid kits arrived at school this afternoon and we have sent 2 kits home with every child today. EECD has asked students to test twice a week and before they return to school to help protect their loved ones and limit the spread of COVID-19 over the winter break and upon their return to school. Please note, kits must be kept in a dry and warm location above 2 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow is the last day of school for our students before the holiday. It is also pajama day. Mrs. Landry, Mrs. Allaby, Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Barrett, and Mrs. Kierstead’s classes go skating tomorrow. Please remember to send your child with a helmet, snow pants and thick mittens.

Have a great evening!

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with a rather lengthy Tuesday talk mail.
Today, school photo retakes were taken.
Yesterday, we learned that the last day of school before the holiday for students in kindergarten through grade 6 will be this Friday, December 17th. Friday will be a full day.
At yesterday’s press conference, we also heard that rapid test kits will be given to schools to be distributed to students. We have not heard any more details on that, and we do not have any kits, but as soon as we know more, we will send you the details.
We still have permission to sing our songs and share our Winter Wonderland with you as we are doing these things outdoors in classroom bubbles. Today was our first concert day! Tomorrow, the schedule is as follows: 8:45- Walsh 9:15- Kingston 9:45- Creighton 10:15-Landry
And on Thursday, December 16: 8:45- White 9:15- Brown 9:45- Hayhoe
Parents are asked to come directly to the playground on your assigned day and time to see your child sing with their class on the playground. You will then walk to the trail with your child to see their ornaments. Everyone must be masked and must physically distance from other families. At this time, it is showing rain for Thursday morning. Please dress warmly and remember to bring an umbrella as rain or shine, the show must go on!
We are moving a couple of our fun school wide days from next week to this week, so Thursday will be wear your favourite holiday sweater, outfit/and/or socks.
Hot lunch forms for the new year are due on Thursday.
On Friday, we will have Pajama Day. Mrs. Allaby, Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Barrett, and Mrs. Kierstead’s classes go skating on Friday. Please remember to send your child with a helmet, snow pants and thick mittens.
That’s it for today. Thanks for listening. Please call us with any questions! Have a wonderful day!

Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School.
Sorry I didn’t send this talk mail on the usual Tuesday. I was awaiting permission from the district to proceed with our December activities.
All classes will be going skating this month. Mrs. Kingston's class went on Monday. This Friday, Mrs. Walsh, Miss Creighton, Mme. Brown, Mme. Hayhoe and Mme White’s classes will be going skating. The remainder of classes will skate on Friday, Dec. 17th. Please remember to send your child with a helmet, snow pants and thick mittens.
The cost of the ice fees are covered by your child’s student fee. The student fee has already been used to purchase your child’s school supplies for the classroom and for the home learning kits. If you haven’t paid your child’s fee, please pay it in total or contact the office to set up an installment program.
Next week, we are decorating the trail behind our school with ornaments the students have made. We hope to turn the trail behind our school into a winter wonderland! We are inviting parents to come and see your child’s ornament outside on the trail and see your child sing 2 songs with their class on the playground. It certainly isn’t a traditional holiday concert or celebration, but it is what we can do with Covid restrictions. Each class will be scheduled for this outside activity that will last 20-30 minutes per class.
Parents are asked to come directly to the playground on your assigned day and time to see your child sing with their class on the playground. You will then walk down to the trail with your child to see their ornaments. Masks must be worn by everyone who attends. The schedule for hearing your child sing and then seeing our winter wonderland is as follows:
Tuesday, December 14: 8:45-Allaby, 9:15-Peters 9:45-Kierstead 10:15-Barrett
Wednesday, December 15: 8:45- Walsh 9:15- Kingston 9:45- Creighton 10:15-Landry
Thursday, December 16: 8:45- White 9:15- Brown 9:45- Hayhoe
A reminder that school photo retakes have been scheduled for next Tuesday, December 14th.
That’s it for today. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at the school. Have a wonderful day!

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School.

Report cards were sent home yesterday. I am very proud of our students and how hard they are working. I want to thank teachers, support staff and parents for working so hard to ensure that our students continue to grow, develop and learn no matter what the challenges we face.

Each class will be going skating once in their class bubble in December. Students will be bringing home permission forms for skating later this week. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, parents will not be able to accompany classes. Because it will be a lot of work for teachers to get all their students' skates on, we ask that you please have skates laced up and ready for students to put their foot in. Students will need helmets, snow or splash pants and mittens to go skating. The cost of skating is covered from your child’s student fee. If you haven’t paid the fee, please ensure you pay it.

Parent/teacher conferences will be this Thursday, December 2 from 4:00-7:00pm and on Friday, December 3 from 8:00-11:00am. Staff will be involved in professional development on Friday afternoon. There will be no school for students on Friday.

Please ensure that your children wear hats, mittens, snow pants and warm coats to school. Even in the cold temperatures, we will continue to take the children outside to learn every day.

Unfortunately, photo retakes were cancelled because of yesterday’s storm. Photo retakes have been rescheduled for December 14.

Finally, last week, Lindsay Savoie facilitated a session on the Science of Reading. Many of you have asked for a recorded copy of the session. The recorded session can be found under the newsletter tab on our DATL website.

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your Tuesday talk mail.

I am including the link for our October newsletter and calendar. Please take some time to read them so you will be aware what events are scheduled for this month and the dates on which they will happen.

In keeping our focus of being safe, this week is both Fire Safety Week and Bus Safety Week. All students will be learning fire safety, and our kindergarten students will be walking in their classroom bubbles to the Fire Station for an outdoor field trip on Wednesday.

On Friday afternoon, all bus students will participate in the district’s Dinobus bus safety program. All students will review bus safety rules and bus students will practice a bus evacuation on their own buses. As all our buses and all our bus students will be participating in this on Friday afternoon, buses may be a little earlier or a little later arriving home. It all depends on how quickly the bus drivers are able to complete the session. You may want to be at the bus stop 5 or 10 minutes earlier on Friday in case they are a little early. On the flip side, you may have to wait 5 or 10 minutes longer than usual if the session runs a little long. Transportation has asked that we please remind   parents to please be at the bus stop as drivers have been instructed not to drop off a student unless a parent or designated guardian is at the stop.

Next week is kindergarten registration week. If you know someone who has a child who should be coming to school next Fall, please tell them to contact the school about kindergarten registration.

Veterans from the Legion are having a poster contest. Information has been sent home with your child. If your child would like to participate, they can do the poster at home and send it back to the school. Posters and entry forms should be returned to our school by November 12.

Finally, I want to wish you and your family a very safe, and restful holiday weekend! These first weeks of school have been stressful for many. We have had to adapt to new Covid restrictions, climbing numbers of cases, exposures, and in some cases, the need to isolate. I am sincerely thankful for your support and partnership as we navigate these challenges together.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your Tuesday talk mail.

Thank you to all of you who are using our Safe Arrival Program to notify us when your child is going to be absent or late. We really appreciate knowing that when your child is not here at school in the morning, they are home safe with you. Safe Arrival can also be used to let us know if you have to pick your child up early for an appointment. We always recommend that you also send your child’s teacher a note to let them know if your child is being picked up for an appointment.

Today, we are sending home a letter with your child’s username, password, and student number. Please keep this in a place you will be able to easily access it for parent/teacher meetings, conferences, or bussing information.

Thursday is Orange Shirt Day, a national day for truth and reconciliation. On Thursday, we will share the story of Phyllis Webstad and her orange shirt.  I am attaching a link to this story if you would like to watch it. We will discuss the importance of kindness, respect, diversity, and reinforce that every child matters. We encourage all students to wear orange on this day.

In keeping with our focus of Be Safe, we will practice our school lockdown on Friday morning. At this young age, I tell the students that we practice lockdowns so we will need to know what to do if an animal ever came into the school and we needed to get it out safely.

On Friday afternoon, weather permitting, each class will participate in a Terry Fox walk.

Finally, a reminder that student school supply fees are due on Thursday. If you are unable to pay the entire fee at once, that is no problem at all, just please contact the school to work out a payment program.

That’s it for today. Thanks for listening. Have a great day!

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your Tuesday talk mail.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and cooperation during drop off time in the morning. We have 17 buses and many, many families who drop off children between 7:50 and 8:20 every morning. Having so many vehicles and so many young children has the potential to be very dangerous, so we so appreciate your cooperation. For those who may not have dropped off children last year, we ask that you:

-Only drop off your child in a designated zone.

- Please have your child ready to get out of the vehicle when you pull up to a designated drop off zone.

-Please stay in the car and only allow your child to get out on the side closest to the school.

-Please wait until the vehicle in front of you pulls away before pulling out

-Please remember never to pass a bus when their lights are flashing

I know it seems like a lot of rules, but they are all in place to keep our students safe.

Thanks to everyone who participated in Becca Told Me To Day and took the opportunity to model and spread kindness throughout our community. I am so enjoying reading all the acts of kindness the students completed. I will be reading some of them on the morning announcements this week and using all the slips to make a kindness heart.

Unfortunately, the Honouring the Children and Peace Powwow scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled. The organizers are hoping to reschedule this event at a later time.

Finally, some of you have been asked about school photos. School photos will be taken this year on Friday, October 15th.

That's it for today. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at the school. Thanks for listening. Have a great day!

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your Tuesday talk mail.

I am attaching September’s newsletter and calendar to this email. Please take a few minutes to read them so you will be familiar with what is happening this month.

Our focus for the months of September and October is Be Safe. We will teach students how to be safe at home, at school and on the bus.

We take the health and safety of your children very seriously and we are committed to doing everything we can to keep them safe. Yesterday, Public Health announced that for the next 2 weeks, students must wear a mask in school and while on school buses. Masks may be removed when students are eating, drinking, engaged in sports or physical education classes. Students do not have to wear their masks when they are playing or learning outside. This will be reassessed by the week of September 27.   Although this isn’t ideal, we do feel it is an important step in keeping our students as safe as possible. I have been in every classroom this morning and students are happy and learning. I am so proud of how resilient they are.

In keeping with our focus of being safe, we also have been learning about fire safety and how to safely exit our homes and school safely in the event of fire. This Thursday, we will practice our first school wide fire safety drill.

Later this month, we will practice our first lockdown, and in October, students will learn more about bus safety.

Another part of our Code of Conduct is Be Kind. We model, teach and promote kindness every day. This Saturday is “Becca Told Me to Day”-a day dedicated to kindness. We will be encouraging children to perform at least 1 act of kindness on Saturday, write it down and send it back to the school so it can be shared on the announcements and/or used to create a heart of kindness that will be displayed in the school. I am looking forward to reading all the kind acts performed this weekend.

Also, this Saturday, many cities and communities will also be participating in Terry Fox walks. We hope to be able to do a Terry Fox walk as a school the week of September 27th.

Finally, a reminder that school fees are due the end of this month. Teachers have already purchased and distributed school supplies for all students so please send in your fee if you haven’t already done so.

I think that it all for today. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at the school.

Thanks for listening. Have a great day!September newsletter 2021.pdf September Calendar 2021 (1).pdf

September 03
Friday, September 3, 2021

Hi everyone

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with a talk mail for families of all students coming to Dr. Leatherbarrow this year. Our new school year starts next week, and we are so excited to welcome, and to welcome back our students.

Again this year, all students, k-2, will start school as part of a staggered entry process and come 2 days next week. Your child will start school on Tuesday, Wednesday OR Thursday, and then come on Friday. All students will attend school on Friday.

By now, I am hoping that each have you have spoken to your child’s classroom teacher and have confirmed what day your child starts school, and what they are to bring. If you haven’t spoken to your child’s teacher, please contact the school today so that we can ensure you have all the information you need for a smooth start to school.

Although visitors in schools will be restricted again this year, parents will be permitted to bring your child into the school on your child’s first day. Parents MUST wear a mask, sanitize in the lobby, and sign in at your child’s classroom. In an effort to keep our students as safe as possible, parents and visitors will be permitted to enter the school by appointment only after the first day.

Buses will be back to maximum capacity this year and it is expected that most students will be taking a bus. Please ensure that you know on what bus your child comes to school in the morning, and on what bus your child will take at the end of the day. Students must wear a mask while on a bus.

If you are driving your child to school, please drop your child off between 7:50-8:20am. Students cannot be dropped off before 7:50am as we are unable to provide supervision before this time. Instruction begins at 8:25 am so please have them here by 8:20 so that they can have a smooth start to their day, and benefit from the morning routines of their classrooms.

School supply fees can be paid on-line or sent with your child in a clearly marked envelope.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at the school.

We are so looking forward to seeing your children next week! Have a wonderful long weekend!

Hi everyone,

It’s Lisa Jardine calling from Leatherbarrow Primary School with your last Tuesday talk mail of the school year!

We made it! Thank you so much for all your support this year! Together, we have continued to educate and care for our children through a year of ever- changing rules, restrictions, protocols and procedures. I want to sincerely thank you for being so wonderful. We are very grateful! With your support, your children have continued to thrive.

I also want to publicly thank this incredible staff who have done their best work in the most challenging of circumstances. I am so proud to be Principal of this school!

This week is STEAM week. This means that each class will dedicate a day this week to science, technology, engineering, art and math. We have planned many fun, hands-on science experiments, and other activities including, but not limited to, Rube Goldberg machines, coding, a fossil find, and an egg drop! It’s a very educational and fun week!

Friday, our last day of school, is a full day. There is no hot lunch on Friday. If you send your child to school on Friday, please send them with a lunch. Report cards will be distributed Friday. As always, classroom teachers will be calling prior to report card distribution if your child is receiving a 1, or 2 so that you can discuss next steps for learning.

Congratulations to Mrs. Brenton who has been selected to be the District’s Physical Education Coach. This means that she will be supporting and mentoring teachers of physical education for at least the next year. We will miss having her at Leatherbarrow, but the entire district will benefit from her expertise.

Finally, looking ahead to next year-we will be doing whole school staggered entry again next fall. This means that on the first week of school 1/3 of our students will come on Tuesday, 1/3 will come on Wednesday and 1/3 will come on Thursday. Everyone will come together on Friday. I will be sending you a letter this summer letting you know on which day your child will start school next year. School supply fees will be able to be paid online in August. We have not received word as of yet as to whether we will be able to have an open house for students and their families in August or September, but I will let you when plans for next school start up are finalized.

That’s it for today. Thanks for listening. And again, thanks for everything!
