Hello ASD-W Families, Students, and Staff,

Each year, on September 30, staff and students are invited to participate in “Orange Shirt Day”.  This day is designed to educate and bring awareness to Canadians about the Canadian Indian residential school system that existed in our country and the impact it has had on Indigenous Communities and people for more than a century.

With recent news regarding the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, ASD-W would like to renew awareness and demonstrate peace and friendship.  We are very fortunate to have strong relationships with the six Wolastoqey Communities that coincide with ASD-W, and leadership from each community contributes to the education of over 600 Indigenous students who attend the provincial schools in our district.

We invite all ASD-W staff and students to wear an “Orange Shirt” on Monday, May 31, as a display of awareness of the residential school history and support for healing.  We acknowledge that age-appropriate conversations may be required among families and within classes.

Please note…Fredericton High School has previously announced that Monday will be a day to “wear blue” at their school in support of Autism Awareness during Disability Awareness Week.  The invitation to staff and students at FHS for wearing orange is extended to any other day throughout the week.

Thank you,

David McTimoney, Superintendent
