Biddington Simonds Pond (WCE) Commemorative – May 28th

The Biddington Simonds Pond (WCE) Commemorative will take place on Thursday, May 28th in the Simonds High School library from 10:00 to 12:00.  There will be representatives will be in attendance from Saint John city council, Anglophone School District South, the Biddington family, Team Green and the school.
 
Background:
 
 
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) received a gift from the late Donald Biddington, a gentleman who was involved with conservation and youth education in Southern New Brunswick. DUC has approached Simonds High School to establish a Wetland Centre of Excellence (WCE) bordering on Simonds High’s campus. Presently there are 18 WCE sites in Canada. The projected initial budget for the project is $35,000: $15 000 in the initial year and $5 000 in each of the four subsequent years. Therefore the initial involvement with DUC is a 5 year partnership.

WCE is intended to help develop a sense of stewardship in students by empowering them to become involved in action-oriented wetland projects though hand’s-on experiences and more in-depth studies of local wetlands. DUC provides technical advice, financial support and facilitates synergies with other schools. DUC also helps to solicit funding from alternate organizations. DUC staff and lead teachers work together to train students to plan and deliver outdoor projects. Team Green is becoming actively involved.
 
This opportunity provides the potential for cross-curricular and multi-level involvement, both
within Simonds High and between local schools. Presently, interested staff at Simonds include individuals in the art, technology, French, science and math departments. Once the project is established, there is further prospective involvement from other local schools and the incorporation of educational opportunities offered through this wetlands project into current curriculum.
