June 01
Science project and Writing piece (FILA)

Good day to all,

Reminders to students:

- Science project presentations are on WEDNESDAY (June 3th)!  Make sure you have practiced and know your stuff!

- Also, we are writing "une lettre d'opinion" this week.  It will be due FRIDAY (June 5th).

- And...hopefully, we will be having our exciting Skype session mid-week!!!

February 09
...Week of Feb. 9th

So, report cards went home on Friday and Parent-Teacher meetings are this week (no school for students this Friday).  I look forward to seeing everyone!

We are into our Electricity unit in Science.

As well, we are wrapping up our focus on Procedural writing in FILA.  There were a few people who were absent last week and may need to stay in at noon or after school to finish their independent pieces.  We have also created little hand puppets (with paper) and are working in small groups preparing a skit which will be performed for the class!  Maybe we'll do a tour, if we have some really super skits!

A reminder:  Please make sure all money is in and the orange form is returned for our two ski trips.  There are still a few outstanding.

January 06
2015

Hi all,

Thanks to all the parents who facilitated their child filling our birdfeeders over the break.  They seemed to be a hit!  Who knew birds (or maybe squirrels...?) liked Wow Butter?  ;-)  Only two feeders didn't fare so well, but we may do some repair work.

In FILA, we continue to focus on procedural writing.  The students will soon be starting their final, formal procedure.  Read any and all types of procedures you come across with your child at home and out-and-about, and discuss the various characteristics, similarities and differences.

In Science, we are working on a small project.  Class time will be given tomorrow and should be enough to finish it, but students may need to complete polish work at home.  This must be completed by Friday.

*Check the agenda for a little note about our BOTTLE DRIVE we are holding this week.  Bottle donations can be dropped off at the back door of the school, or at the two addresses specified on the note.*

December 08
Week of Dec. 8th

Students need to finish the draft copy of their procedures.  We will be peer-editing tomorrow.  Spelling improvement is an important goal that most students must be working on on a continual basis!  The dictionary is your best friend - use it!

The plan is to hang our birdfeeders out in the Ecoclassroom.  Students will sign up for days, over Christmas break, on which they are able to come refill our feeders.  I'll make sure feed is available.  On school days throughout the winter, we will take turns looking after them at noonhours.  It will be interesting to see how our feeders hold up, especially to the potential squirrel threat ;-).  We may need some redesigns...we'll see.  One student's feeder (which he took home) has already fallen victim to this terrible end.  It's all a learning process!

November 30
First week of December?!

Science test will be this week.

Students should be building a bank of verbs they can use in their procedure (other than "add" or "put").

November 24
Week of November 24

We will be writing about how we made our bird feeders this week.  Students may need to be looking up verbs at home that they will need for their description (steps in the process).

In Science, we will have a quiz this Thursday or Friday. Students in 6Ca need to be able to describe the difference between a vertebrate and a invertebrate.  They also need to be studying their list of definitions, as well as how to classify vertebrates.

November 18
This week

We are talking about procedural writing in FILA class, and are also examining the trait of structure within various texts.

In Sciences, students need to be studying the various traits of vertebrates, along with invertebrates and arthropod notes.  There will be a quiz very soon...

Last day for bringing items in for the Christmas Child boxes is Wednesday, Nov. 19th.  Thank you so much to the people who brought in donations for our boxes.  As well, if there are any final school clothing orders, they are also being sent in Nov. 19th.

There is a yellow half-sheet that will come home in students' agendas.  It is information about the parent survey regarding the new pilot report cards.  This survey closes next week.

There will be no activity night in November, but there will be a semi-formal activity night on December 11th.

This week

Surprise snow day!

Science project presentations tomorrow.

Progress reports go home tomorrow as well.  Parent-teacher meeting times can be scheduled through the office - see note on the report card for details.

Please sign reading comprehension that comes home today with your child.  It was a challenging one for students, so we used it as a "teachable moment" to further discuss the types of questions, context, how to read questions and choices carefully, etc.

Hope to see you this week or next!
