Loran Scholar at Leo Hayes High School one of 36 top students in CanadaFebruary 20 Dhanishta Ambwani, a Grade 12 student at Leo Hayes High School, is one of two students in New Brunswick and one of 36 in Canada to be named among the 2020 class of Loran Scholars.
The Loran Award is Canada's largest and most comprehensive four-year undergraduate award and includes a $100,000 scholarship.
The award is granted to young Canadians on the basis of character, community service, leadership potential, academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, integrity and a high level of personal autonomy.
In addition to the scholarship, the Loran program offers mentorship opportunities and connects award winners with other high-potential youth through scholar gatherings. Following their undergraduate studies, Loran Scholars are welcomed into an engaged alumni community.
Among her credentials, Ambwani founded and leads the Youth for Youth Art Collective in her community. The collective’s mission is to create and empower a community of youth artists. She also leads her school’s Model UN club and initiatives to provide free menstrual products and meals to those in need. She volunteers actively at the local hospital and was a student intern at NB Power.
Founded in Toronto in 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation is a national charitable organization awarding scholarships for students entering university in Canada. This year's Loran Scholars were selected from over 5,100 applications from across the country following a two-day interview process.
After graduation in June 2020, Ambwani will be attending a Canadian university to pursue post-secondary studies in a field of her choice.

Leo Hayes High School student named Canadian Youth AmbassadorFebruary 19 A Grade 12 student at Leo Hayes High School has been named a 2020 Canadian Youth Ambassador.
Carrie Pelkey will be among 30 Canadian youth travelling to Panama in April to participate in an EF Service Learning tour. The ambassadors will work alongside community members on a sustainable development project to support local needs. They will reconvene in Ottawa in May to meet with Members of Parliament and Senators to present their action plans.
"I am interested in the youth ambassador program because I will have the opportunity to learn from other cultures," Pelkey said. "I will get to create new relationships and bonds with other passionate youth, share my ideas and become more of a global citizen."
During the outreach trip to Central America, Pelkey said she hopes to learn what inspires people from different countries to travel and come together to work toward a common goal regardless of their country of origin. Her interests at school include theatre, softball and swimming.
The EF Canadian Youth Ambassador program is a five-year initiative launched in 2016 to provide mentorship and travel opportunities to a total of 150 Canadian youth representing every province and territory. The objectives of the program are developing global citizenship, creating social change, and fostering passion.
EF is an international education company focused on language, academics, educational travel, and culture experience. It currently operates more than 600 schools and offices in over 50 countries to fulfill one global mission: opening the world through education. In Canada, EF has helped educators foster global citizenship through experiential learning since 1984.
Biology students at Leo Hayes High School learn about sharksJanuary 15 Students studying Grade 11 Advanced Biology at Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton have been doing some hands on learning about sharks and their role in the animal kingdom.
On January 14, 29 students came to class, while 20 parents and family members joined them in an interesting lab experiment to dissect dogfish sharks, one of the best known species of smaller sharks. To their teacher, the procedure was all part of science.
"It was an excellent way to see, touch and explore the various organs and organ systems of an animal," said teacher Lisa Holyoke-Walsh. "It is so essential for these students to see how dynamic and intricate the various body systems are in these animals and to make connections to similarities and differences in our own bodies."
Biology is the study of living things, organisms and the systems and processes that permit life. Studies include subjects like cell biology, evolutionary biology, marine biology, and plant biology. Sharks are fish and organic in nature. They have existed almost unchanged for 400 million years – long before the dinosaur came into existence.
Holyoke-Walsh said the class on sharks was a "culminating event" for her students as well as an important learning experience for them, their parents, siblings and the one grandmother who attended.
Shown in the photo below are students and family members in biology class with teacher Lisa Holyoke Walsh.
Giant food drive at Leo Hayes High School a huge successNovember 01 Students at Leo Hayes High School stuffed a bus full of 3,420 pounds (1,551.2 kilograms) of groceries on Oct. 26 in support of the school's Feeds the Lions campaign and student hunger program.
This year's food drive was led by student leader Abby Carter who rallied a team effort between We Leo Hayes (Free the Children) and Feed the Lions in cooperation with local businesses Giant Tiger and Right Choice Realty.
"Yahoo, what an amazing success!" said Principal Brad Sturgeon when he saw the amount of food collected.
In the days leading up to the drive, approximately 30-40 student volunteers handed out flyers in their neighbourhoods and then returned later to pick up donations.
Their school bus for 'Stuff the Bus' was also parked at Giant Tiger on a Saturday where even more donations were gathered. Giant Tiger also sold hundreds of paper bags filled with groceries at the store to place onboard the bus.
"We are so proud of the students involved and we're appreciative of the community's efforts," said teacher Tanya McBride.
Leo Hayes High graduate excels in the face of adversityJune 11 Abigail Cartwright is a brave, young woman on a mission. She graduates from Leo Hayes High School this year with a long list of achievements under her belt, despite her personal struggle with serious health issues.
When she started high school, Cartwright was an athlete who planned many sports. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a group of disorders that affects
connective tissues supporting the skin, bones, blood vessels, and many other
organs and tissues. It presents as a wide range of symptoms, ranging from
mildly loose joints to life-threatening complications.
"She did not let this stand in her way," said Vice-Principal Natalie Capson-Daniels. "She decided to find new things to do with her
time, and joined the Science Club, Free the Children, and Best Buddies. In
Grade 10, she became a Peer Mentor and took on a leadership role in both Peer
Mentors and Best Buddies. In September 2018, she was chosen as one of four LHHS
students to attend the Canadian Leadership Conference in Alberta. This summer,
she will be travelling to Ecuador to help build a school and has been helping
to raise he money to make this initiative happen."
Cartwright has also had an active role for the last two years in
the New Brunswick Youth Voice Committee. This committee focuses on the
Convention on the Rights of the Child’s Article 19, which states that “you have
the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated, in body or mind. " She has also assisted in training other young people, developing resources, and
working on strategies to keep children safe in New Brunswick and has presented
to UNICEF on behalf of Canada on strategies for youth safety.
"This is an impressive resume for anyone, but knowing what
Abby had to overcome everyday makes it even more extraordinary," Capson-Daniels explained.
At the start of Grade 10, Cartwright's health began to decline rapidly. By the start of Grade 11, her
right arm became useless and would constantly dislocate with her hips and
knees soon following suit. She was told that she needed to start water therapy,
or she would be confined to a wheelchair. She had an operation on her right
shoulder to stabilize it during exam week of Grade 11. Some nerves were damaged
in her neck and she was unable to swallow or talk, and was told that she would
need a feeding tube. She worked hard to overcome this. Six months later, she
had to have multiple surgeries on the same shoulder as it dislocated many
times and she would need to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance and sedated
in order to relocate it.
Cartwright is now set to graduate with the ability to use both
arms and muscle gain in her hips. She completed a dual credit program at the University of New Brunswick (UNB),
completing a first year computer science course this year. She has been
accepted into the engineering program at UNB and plans to attend McGill University after
that to obtain a degree in biomedical engineering. Her goal is to one day
return to UNB as a professor and create prosthetics.
