Weekly Announcements, May 18, 2017

Hello! Today is Thursday, May 18th and this is Ms. McGrath calling with some announcements for Raiders and their families.

We are having an amazing week here at RVMS!
Last night, at the District Turnaround Achievement Awards we were happy to honour River Valley Grade 8 student Richard Clark. We are very proud of Richard’s time here at RVMS. In Richard’s own words from the ceremony last night “Who is the teacher and who is the student?” Richard did an excellent job of reminding us that we are all “working, learning and growing” together at RVMS and got a great response for his very insightful message.
Today we celebrated “Outdoor Classroom Day”.  Research shows that connecting students to nature and the environment improves their learning in many ways. Teachers were encouraged to take advantage of the wonderful campus we have and many, many classes were held outside today. We hope to be able to continue this on good weather days for the remainder of the school year.
Another great event is taking place in Gr. 8. Under Mr. Sullivan’s supervision, some Gr. 8’s are participating in Project Amity which encourages “generations helping generations” which saw the  class visiting a local Senior’s residence and “Project 100” which involves fundraising to run a fun activity day at Centennial School in the North end. We are very proud of the citizenship shown by these students.
Finally, we are extremely excited to announce that our school has been selected as one of the Regional Finalists in the Samsung “Solve for Tomorrow” Education contest which could see our school awarded with up to $20 000 in Samsung Technology for our students. Mrs. Sawyer, Mr. Vincent and a team of talented students are working on our final submission for this contest so stay tuned for more information in the near future.
Monday, May 22 is Victoria Day and there is no school for students on that day.
Next Thursday, May 25th is our final regular school dance of the year. The dance is from 6:00-8:00 pm. The entrance fee is $5 and glow sticks will also be available for purchase with all proceeds going to support the “Project 100” fun day at Centennial School. Chef Frank will also have a canteen available
Tomorrow and next Friday, “Project 100” will also be selling Popcorn at Raider Time and next Friday, May 26th students may pay $1 to wear a hat for the day with proceeds also going to that project.
That is all for now, Have a wonderful holiday weekend with your families.
As always, do not hesitate to contact me at the school if you have any questions.
Thank you and good evening!
