Hello! Today is Monday, June 4th and this is Ms. McGrath calling with a few messages for Raiders and their parents.
First of all, I want to remind families once again that this Wednesday, June 6th is a half-day for students and we will be following the regular noon dismissal procedures on that day with most students dismissed or leaving by bus by 12:10.
We have many, many events and activities scheduled in our building over the next three weeks and lots of work still to be completed.
Here are a few important dates:
June 5                   HVHS Band Presentation 1:05
June 5                   Parent Info Session – Preparing for Middle School - Theatre 6:30
June 6                   Pancake Breakfast – Gr. 8 FI (in support of Prince Charles School) 7:55-8:30 (new item)
June 6                   Noon Dismissal for Students/Report Card Preparation for Teachers
June 7                   ASD-S Middle Level Track – UNBSJ
June 8                   WE are Silent Day at RVMS
June 8                   ASD-S Middle Level Track (raindate)
June 8                   Pep Rally – Block 7 (new item)
June 13-16          Gr. 8 Quebec Trip
June 20                 Gr. 8 Cabaret
June 21                 Awards 9:30 a.m
June 22                 Final Report Card – Last Day for Students

Attached to the e-mail version of this message you will also find a flyer from the Kingston Peninsula Heritage Association. They are planning a special day of events on Sunday, June 24th to celebrate the early settlements on the Peninsula and would welcome participation for all citizens, particularly local youth.
Lastly, I have something fairly serious to speak about. My staff and I have recently become aware that many of our stduents are struggling with the proper use of social media. Students are being pressured to “sext” inappropriate pictures. Some students are sending them to compare with one another some are being pressured to send pictures to “boyfriends” and “girlfriends” and some are participating because they think it is “cool” These pictures can then be shared with anyone. Many of them are sexually explicit. Even more surprisingly, many students seem to think that this is normal and acceptable behaviour.
I encourage you to speak with your children about this. Help then learn to say “no” to the peer pressure to participate in this. Help them understand that those pictures will be on the internet and shared...forever (even if they are on snapchat). Help them understand that, as they are underage, these pictures could actually be considered child pornography and dealt with accordingly by the authorities.
I have attached an information sheet for you and I can provide you with more resources if necessary.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
As always, I can be reached at trudy.mcgrath@nbed.nb.ca and, on my direct line, at 738-6511.
