Cell Phones

FHS PSSC Minutes November 6 2017, reference cell phones:  At the Nov 6 PSSC meeting, there was a discussion of cell phone usage in the classroom, and a request that parents not send texts or call/facetime during class time.
Checking their phones can be difficult for students to resist. The following article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” was shared with the committee -  https://www.theatlantic.com/m agazine/archive/2017/09/has-the-smartphone-destroyed-a-generation/534198/

English Language Proficiency Assessment

A reminder that the English Language Proficiency assessment occurs this month.  This is a provincial literacy assessment which is a graduation requirement, and is administered at the grade 9 level.  Information letters were given to grade 9 students to take home in December.
Students who do not pass this assessment in grade 9 have another opportunity to participate in grade 11, and again in grade 12 if necessary.  For grade 9 students, the assessment will take place during exam week in place of an English examination.  Grade 11 and 12 students who have not yet successfully completed the assessment have been notified, and will participate on January 17.
If you have questions regarding the English Language Proficiency assessment, please contact Vice-Principal Elaine Kilfillen.
