Transportation Services
The Minister of Education under NB Regulation 2001-51 outlines eligibility for transportation service by school bus – 1) for those public school students who live farther than 2.4 km from their zone school; and 2) for those public school students who live on side roads longer than 1.5 km.
Generally, Anglophone West School District provides an enhanced level of service than prescribed by Regulation within existing resources.
The transportation services team strives to provide an efficient, economical and equitable service to all students eligible for bus transportation, at the same time recognizing the need to minimize indiscriminate use of the transportation system.
The guideline for the number of school bus stops along a route is two stops per kilometre. School bus drivers have the authority to group near-by stops together.
Parents are responsible for the safety of their children to and from the school bus stop.
School bus drivers also have the right to determine in inclement weather whether to travel on a particular road. School bus routes and stops are subject to change according to the needs of operational requirements.
For those living in the area of parental responsibility around a school, i.e. within 2.4 km, check out the Internet for ideas parents in other jurisdictions have come up with (e.g. walking school bus) – groups of parents collectively being responsible for the safety of their children to and from school.
www.saferoutestoschool.ca It’s the “green” and “active living” way to go.
The Transportation Information Line is 453-5454.
Select (1) for information about school closures and late bus announcements
Select (2) to request school bus number, stop, time information
Additionally, morning late school bus announcements are made on local radio stations as we become aware – this is for buses that will be more than 20 minutes late on their runs because of mechanical problems.
Help Your Child Have a Positive Experience on the School Bus
1) Review road safety rules with your child:
a. Walk on the sidewalks and cross at the crosswalks.
b. In the absence of sidewalks and crosswalks, walk on the left side of the road facing the traffic. Stop, look and listen - cross the road when it is safe to do so.
c. Remember to walk, do not run, across the road.
2) Make sure your child knows their school bus stop and what it looks like. Be there to send off and greet your child.
3) Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time.
4) Review and follow the five basic school bus safety rules:
a. Obey the driver
b. Respect others
c. Remain seated
d. Keep the aisle clear
e. Talk quietly
5) Ensure there are no hanging toys or drawstrings from your child’s clothing or book bag. These can get caught on handrails or in doors.
6) Because of safety and/or space reasons, the following items are not allowed on school busses:
• skate boards
• large musical instruments
• hockey sticks
• ice skates/roller skates (must be in a canvas type bag and/or have skate guards)
• skis, poles, fishing rods, etc.
• suitcases
• archery equipment
• animals
Student School Bus Safety Training
School bus drivers work with students on their buses to ensure they know how to be safe in and around the bus. This is reinforced in the classroom with the Department of Education Dino-Bus school bus safety program.
The week before school starts each year there is a First-Time Riders school bus safety orientation program for students entering kindergarten. Information is distributed to parents at the May kindergarten orientation meetings at the schools. Older students who have not been a bus student before but will be that fall can also take advantage of the First-Time Riders program.
During the first few months of school all students at all schools will participate in school bus emergency evacuation drills. Additionally, each school bus driver is to review emergency evacuation procedures with each of their bus loads of students.
